Marionville and North Platte will battle for Missouri Class 1 football championship

The Marionville Comets and North Platte Panthers will face off at 3 p.m. CT on Friday in the Missouri Class 1 football championship game at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

Marionville, which has won 11 or more games in four straight seasons, is back in the Class 1 championship game for the first time since 2006 and seeking its first title since 2003. The Comets are seeking their second championship in five title game appearances.

North Platte is in the championship game for the second time in school history. The Panthers won the Class 1A title in 1998.

Marionville (13-0)

The Comets, who survived a tough quarterfinal game against Portageville with a 17-14 victory, are averaging 40.6 points per game and permitting just 4.8 points per contest – with four shutouts.

Coach Paden Grubbs' squad is averaging 334.8 yards per game after rushing for 2,969 yards and passing for 1,383 yards. 

Sophomore fullback Cash Pomeroy, a 6-foot-2, 240-pounder, has run for 1,222 yards, averaging 8.4 yards per carry, and 20 touchdowns. Senior running back Hugh Eaton has run for 882 yards and 14 touchdowns. 

Sophomore quarterback Bryer Guerin has passed for 1,349 yards and 22 touchdowns (with three interceptions). 

The Comets' defense has been led by senior defensive end Garrett Grimm (87 tackles, two forced fumbles, one sack, one interception, one fumble recovery), senior linebacker Hugh Eaton (86 tackles, five interceptions, two sacks, one fumble recovery) and sophomore linebacker Pomeroy (80 tackles, three forced fumbles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries). 

North Platte (12-1)

The Panthers have won 10 straight games since a 23-14 loss to East Buchanan in Week 3. 

North Platte had 10 straight losing seasons, including going 0-20 in 2020-2021, before going 6-5 a year ago. Now the Panthers, who average 36.2 points per game and allow 14 per contest, are playing for a state championship. 

Coach Jared Quigley's squad is averaging 335.2 yards per game, having rushed for 3,152 yards and passed for 1,205.

Senior quarterback Colton Kirkham has run for 1,276 yards and 13 touchdowns and passed for 1,105 yards and seven scores (with nine interceptions). Senior running back Liam Servaes has run for 822 yards and 11 touchdowns. 

Chance Garber, a senior linebacker, leads the defense with 168 tackles and nine sacks to go along with two fumble recoveries, one interception and one forced fumble. Senior defensive end Hayden Gibson (91 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries) and sophomore linebacker Dylan Armstrong (91 tackles, three sacks, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, one forced fumble) have both had strong seasons.
