Archie and Worth County will battle for Missouri 8-man championship

The Archie Whirlwinds and Worth County Tigers will face off at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday night in the Missouri 8-man football championship game at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

Archie has four straight seasons with at least 10 wins and is 25-1 since the beginning of the 2022 season, but the Whirlwinds are searching for their first state football championship in their first appearance in the title game.

Worth County (partnering with Northeast Nodaway) has won 12 straight games since losing its season opener, 38-34, to South Nodaway. The Tigers have won seven 8-man football championships (1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2007, 2011 and 2017) and have finished second four times (2005, 2006, 2018, 2021).

Archie (13-0)

The Whirlwinds are averaging 74.2 points per game this season and allowing just 9.2, though they've averaged 82.2 points per game (and allowed 23 per game) in four playoff contests. 

Senior quarterback Briar McIntire has powered the run-heavy Archie offense that has racked up more than 4,000 rushing yards. 

McIntire has run for 1,615 yards, averaging 11 yards per carry, and 36 touchdowns while passing for 883 yards and 25 TDs (with one interception). Senior RB Kaden Sutton has rushed for 1,033 yards and 23 TDs and leads the team with 19 receptions for 472 yards and 12 receiving TDs.

McIntire leads the defense with 108 tackles along with three interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries from his linebacker spot. Sutton has 74 tackles and a team-high six interceptions at linebacker. Brayden Daniels, a junior nose tackle, has 65 tackles, 12 sacks and five forced fumbles. 

Worth County (12-1)

The Tigers are averaging 63.5 points per game this season and allowing 13.8 points per game. Their 40 points scored in their 40-14 semifinal win over South Holt was the fewest points they've scored in a win this year.

Worth County has more of a versatile offense than Archie, with 3,802 rushing yards and 1,566 passing yards on the season. 

Leading the offense is senior quarterback Tyler New, who has rushed for 1,892 yards, averaging 14 yards per carry, and 37 touchdowns. He has passed for 1,329 yards and 32 touchdowns (with just one interception). 

Junior running back Landon Wilmes has rushed for 1,191 yards and 21 TDs and scored 23 total TDs. New's favorite target is senior tight end Grant McIntyre, who has 33 catches for 720 yards and 21 touchdowns. 

The Tigers' defense has been led by sophomore linebacker Lucas Frisch (131 tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery) and New (105 tackles, one sack). McIntyre has 64 tackles and four interceptions from his cornerback spot.
