Meet Konnor Griffin, 2024 MLB Draft’s only high school baseball player ranked in top 10
Konnor Griffin doesn't know what it's like to not win a state championship in Mississippi high school baseball.
Jackson Prep has won six consecutive MAIS Class 6A state championships, with Griffin taking titles as an eighth-grader, freshman and junior.
Why no sophomore season? He reclassified from the Class of 2025 to 2024, which leaves him as a 17-year-old entering his senior season as the top-ranked high school baseball player in the country.
MLB this week released its top 100 draft prospects in 2024, and Griffin is the only high school player in the top 10, sitting at No. 8.
Although he throws 96 on the mound, MLB and LSU — Griffin committed to the Tigers last December — like him as an outfielder.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound athlete is viewed as a five-tool prospect and potential 30-30 player in the majors, and it seems unlikely that he'll choose LSU over MLB given his draft projection.
Griffin was a key contributor as a freshman on the Jackson Prep team that won its fifth straight state championship in 2022, hitting .472 and holding a 1.64 ERA on the mound.
He followed that up with a junior season hitting .537 with eight home runs and 19 stolen bases while going 7-1 with a 1.38 ERA on the mound as Jackson Prep made it six in a row.
Griffin competed over the summer for the U-18 Team USA in Taiwan, coached by Michael Cuddyer and LaTroy Hawkins, who have a combined 36 years of experience playing in the majors.
“I was just trying to ask them a lot of questions," Griffin told WLBT-3. "I’m trying to soak in everything they say, because they have a lot of knowledge of the game. They played it for a long time.”
Griffin is on track to do the same.
His final high school baseball season starts in February, and the 2024 MLB Draft is in July.
