Florida high school football preview: Sanford Seminole at Cocoa

This contest went to overtime last season between the two teams

COCOA, FLORIDA- One of the most heavily anticipated games of the Week 7 slate is over on the Treasure Coast when Sanford Seminole heads over to face Cocoa tonight at 7 p.m.

To say this one could be close, you might be reminiscing to last year’s overtime game between the two schools.

Sanford Seminole ended up edging out Cocoa 35-29, but it would be the Tigers being the club that eventually went on to win a state championship of the two. Now, both schools are on similar trajectories to making a run in their respective classifications.

The Seminoles (5-1) enters the game coming off a big rivalry game win over Apopka, 21-3. Sanford Seminole is now riding a 3-game winning streak since losing to Treasure Coast 14-9 back on Sep. 8th.

Penn commitment Karson Siqueiros-Lasky, who transferred over from Lake Highland Prep during the offseason, has played exceptionally for the Seminoles. Siqueiros-Lasky completed 75-of-124 passes for 936 yards and 14 touchdowns to just four picks.

The top target in the passing game is senior wide receiver Michael Key, who caught 18 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns. Fellow senior Marvin Brown leads the team in catches with 28 for 278 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior running back Treyvin Clark leads the tailback room with a team-high 427 yards on 75 carries and two touchdowns. Junior Rodney Grant is second on the team with 380 yards and two scores.

On defense, 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive tackle Preston Watson leads the front seven with a team-high 38 tackles, 12 for loss and four sacks. The second leading tackler for the Seminoles is defensive back Damun Allen with 37.

When talking about one of the state’s most prolific offenses, you can’t go far without mentioning Cocoa (4-1). Sophomore quarterback Brady Hart has completed 118-of-166 passes for 1,505 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The team has totaled 391 yards on the ground as they favor the air attack over the run. Making his name well known all over state as an emerging wideout is junior Jayvan Boggs, who has caught 41 passes for 601 yards and 12 touchdowns. Senior CJ Bragg is the team’s other lead wide receiver with 37 catches for 494 yards and three scores.

On the defensive side, the Tigers’ strength is mainly reliant on their front seven. Linebackers Samadrae Hawkins and Daiveon Parham have combined for 109 tackles and 14 going for a loss.

Defensive linemen Davi’yon Hawkins-Ingram and Loren Ward have combined for 11 sacks and 22 quarterback hurries.
