Teryn Gardner, Mead wrap up another Greater Spokane League girls basketball title

Gardner scores career-high 36 points as No. 2 Panthers' big second quarter puts away Gonzaga Prep, 81-59

SPOKANE, Wash. - Teryn Gardner wasn’t going to let her senior-night game be forgotten.

With Gardner scoring a career-high 36 points, second-ranked Mead took down Gonzaga Prep, 81-59, to win its third consecutive Greater Spokane League girls basketball championship.

The Panthers' league winning streak is now at 27 games.

Early on, it looked like the Bullpups might be on track to win Round 2 against the Panthers, taking an early 14-7 lead in the first four minutes of the game.

Gardner and the Panthers had a different plan: They responded by outscoring Gonzaga Prep, 37-9, for the rest of the first half. Gardner scored 14 points by herself in the second quarter.

“She’s our leader, and when we were down, I never worried.” Mead girls coach Quantae Anderson said. “I knew that she would be able to get us on track, and that’s what happened.”

Getting to cut down the nets - and grabbing another league title - never gets old, Anderson said.

“To earn a league championship, that’s what we’ve worked for, and we're not done yet.” Gardner said.

Mead hit 10 3-pointers, with six coming from Gardner. She would made 14 of her 23 field-goal attempts overall.

The Panthers' defense did its job, too, forcing multiple turnovers and empty Gonzaga Prep possessions.

“Our pressure really worked; we forced a lot of steals. It was really cool to see it all come together.” Anderson said.

Aylah Cornwall led the scoring for the Bullpups with 16 points.
