Look: Freshman hits buzzer-beater to lift Martin's Mill to Texas state high school girls basketball title

Freshman Kara Nixon goes the length of the court for the game-winner. Celebration ensues

Kara Nixon may as well have put a cape on for the final eight seconds of the Texas high school state championship.

With the game tied, the freshman guard took a baseline inbounds the length of the court and banked a heavily contested shot off the glass as the buzzer sounded to lift Martin's Mill to UIL Class 2A state glory.

The Mustangs, which consist of just one senior and a heap of underclassmen, beat Nocona 44-42 on Saturday afternoon to win their seventh state championship in program history.

Nixon hit a 3 to pull Martin's Mill within one, with 40-39 with 1:40 left, and hit another with 16 seconds remaining to give the Mustangs their first lead since the second quarter.

She finished with a team-high 16 points, hit 3 of 6 3-point attempts, was a perfect 3-for-3 at the line and chipped in five boards, four assists and two blocks on the day.

As a team, Martin's Mill shot 46.9 percent from the field and 53.8 percent (7 of 13) from 3-point range.
