DeSoto dominates South Oak Cliff; Fight in stands ends game early
DALLAS, TEXAS - DeSoto showed no signs of rust after being off for more than two weeks.
The Eagles scored and scored often in a dominating first-half performance as they rolled off 47 points by scoring on each of their first seven possessions. DeSoto went on to a 54-14 win against South Oak Cliff Saturday night at John Kincaide Stadium.
However, the game was called with more than six minutes left. Confusion ensued after both teams sprinted off the field with reports of a shooting incident, though it was not clear whether it was in the stands or outside the stadium. After a delay of several minutes, the game was called.
A Dallas ISD spokesperson told SBLive a fight took place in the stands and someone involved in the fight yelled "gun," but no gun was found nor were any shots fired.
DeSoto coach Claude Mathis told the Dallas Morning News the fight involved two teenagers, and he and South Oak Cliff coach Jason Todd agreed to end the game, which was lopsided since the first quarter.
It was DeSoto’s first game since Aug. 25, when the Eagles went to Allen and posted a 39-7 win. They picked up right where they left off on Saturday.
DeSoto (2-0) needed only the game’s first 28 seconds to get its initial score, as quarterback DJ Bailey launched a 74-yard catch-and-run to receiver Daylon Singleton, who on Friday announced his commitment to SMU.

Then, after the Bears punted on their opening series, DeSoto needed just six plays to find the end zone, with Bailey finding Tristan Bailey for a 46-yard TD pass, making it 13-0.
DeSoto made it 20-0 barely six minutes in as junior tailback Jakyree Washington broke off a 36-yard TD run. It became 26-0 by the end of the opening quarter as the Eagles finished off a 10-play 63-yard drive with a 5-yard TD run from another running back, senior Jaden Trawick.
Early in the second quarter, DJ Bailey hit freshman receiver Ethan Feaster deep down the field for a 58-yard TD. Bailey then had his fourth TD pass to his fourth different receiver, this to Antonio Pride Jr. from 43 yards out. Pride then added a two-point conversion pass to Jamari Laye to make it 40-0 with 6:47 left until halftime.
DeSoto had its seventh TD on its seventh series on a 34-yard burst from senior Marvin Duffey. The Eagles had another chance to score on their eighth possession, but missed a field goal to end the first half.
Nevertheless, it was an overall dominant performance by DeSoto, the defending Class 6A Division II champions. The Eagles amassed 488 yards of total offense in the first half while holding the Bears to minus 16 yards. SOC also punted on all seven of its first-half possessions.
The defending 5A DII champion Bears (1-2), who lost their season opener to reigning 6A DI champ Duncanville before beating Lancaster last week, did finally break through on the scoreboard by taking the second-half kickoff and moving 71 yards in five plays.
Quarterback Carter Kopecky found Trey Jackson from 53 yards out for a TD. Later in the third, SOC had another big-play TD, a 64-yard run from Khalill Ewell.
Trawick had his second rushing TD on the night with 6:29 left, a 6-yarder as the Eagles went back up by 40 points, 54-14.
Bailey completed 7-of-8 passes for 242 yards and four TDs in the first half. He was shaken up right after throwing his final TD and was able to walk off the field. He did return for some action in the second half.
DeSoto will have its home opener on Friday, taking on Dallas Skyline. But maybe the Eagles’ most important home game will fall on Oct. 27, when they welcome Duncanville to town.
