We have 10 athletes nominated this week for SBLive’s Lower State South Carolina Defensive Football Player of the Week from Aug. 31-Sept. 1 and we ask you, the fans, to help decide who should indeed be the top athlete selected. Voting will conclude on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 11:59 p.m. and the winner will be announced in next week’s poll.

Here are this week’s nominations:
Landen Newman, Trinity Collegiate
The senior defensive back returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown and made seven tackles in a 65-14 rout of Atlantic Collegiate. One of the tackles was for loss and Newman also had a pass breakup.
Alexander Young, Edisto
Young recovered a fumble after stripping the ball from the quarterback and returned it 19 yards to the opponents’ 9 to set up a touchdown in the Cougars’ 27-14 win over Columbia. The junior end also had two quarterback hurries.
Peter Nodelman, May River
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound junior recovered two fumbles, intercepted a pass and made four tackles in the Sharks’ 45-6 win over Waccamaw.
Jayvion Harris, Whale Branch
Harris had 10 tackles, including 3 for loss, and a sack as the Warriors cruised to a 44-18 win over Ridgeland-Hardeeville.
Gabe Roper, Northwood Academy
Roper had a huge night with 15 tackles, including 6 for loss, in the Chargers’ 40-12 win over Thomas Hayward Academy.
Savion Smalls, James Island
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound sophomore had seven tackles, including three for loss, and two sacks as the Trojans overwhelmed First Baptist 64-0.
Kyle Baldwin, Oceanside Collegiate
Baldwin had an interception to stop a Carolina Forest drive as the Landsharks prevailed 14-13 in a defensive battle.
