Shawn Alderman, the longtime boys basketball coach at Tigard High School in Oregon, has died at 52.

The Tigard-Tualatin School District released a statement Monday morning announcing Alderman's death. A cause of death was not released.

Alderman coached the Tigard boys basketball team for 25 years, leading them to the 2002 OSAA Class 4A state championship. Tigard is a suburb of Portland.

“This is heartbreaking news for our community,” the school district wrote in their statement. “We know this news will affect our students in different ways. Some staff and students may experience a great deal of shock, sadness, anxiety, and anger. Feeling sad is a normal response to any loss. Any death, even if the person wasn’t known to you, can bring up feelings and emotions related to other losses.”

Alderman was a health and physical education teacher at Tigard. He played college basketball and baseball at Lewis & Clark College in Portland.

Tigard (3-13) is scheduled to play Tualatin (12-6) Monday night in a district rivalry game. There will be a moment of silence observed for Alderman before the game.
