CLASS 6A

Colin Brooks scored midway through the second half, and Franklin avenged an earlier loss to PIL rival Lincoln with a 1-0 victory Wednesday in the second round of the OSAA Class 6A boys soccer state playoffs.

Jonathan Hernandez made four saves in the first 10 minutes to help the Lightning (12-3-2) survive an early barrage and post their ninth shutout of the season.

The Cardinals beat Franklin 2-1 on Oct. 11 to win the league championship.

“Lincoln is a strong team, very competitive, and they started off hot,” said Lightning coach Jose Milian. “They were taking any opportunity to take shots.”

Franklin is the highest seed remaining of three PIL teams that made the quarterfinals. The other two made history by becoming the lowest seeds to reach the final eight since the OSAA began seeding the entire field in 2013.

No. 30 seed Grant (5-9-2) avenged a loss to Cleveland — part of a seven-game losing streak — by beating the Warriors 4-2 in penalties after the game finished 2-2.

No. 29 McDaniel (8-8-1) — which had won one of its previous nine games entering the playoffs — won at Mountainside 3-1 to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009.

“I think some of our teams got seeds that were misleading,” Milian said. “One of the things I could tell off the bat with each team this year is that we all really tested ourselves, so coming into league, the stats were very misleading. Every game we played in league this year felt like a playoff game.”

Before this season, only five seeds No. 20 or lower had reached the quarterfinals — including three in 2015 (No. 23 Clackamas, No. 25 Roosevelt and No. 28 Barlow). Beaverton (No. 24 in 2013) and Aloha (No. 28 in 2017) were the others.

Franklin will play top seed Lakeridge (15-1), a 5-2 winner over Wells, in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

McDaniel 3, Mountainside 1

Tavener Russ broke a scoreless tie with a deflected shot from 30 yards in the 55th minute, and the Mountain Lions pulled off another victory and reached the quarterfinals for the first time in the past 14 years.

Bryan Carmona Zepeda curled in a free kick from 25 yards in the 62nd minute, and 10 minutes later, he scored again after winning the ball back in transition for his team-leading 14th goal.

“Bryan continues to prove why he is one of the best attacking midfielders in the state,” McDaniel coach Ugo Uche said. “Lucas Johnson added some great minutes as he returns from injury, and freshmen Myles Ready and Emerson Albarran contributed strong minutes to bolster the team’s performance.”

Jerry Barefield made 10 saves for McDaniel, which will take on Lake Oswego (11-3-2) in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The Lakers ousted Willamette 5-3 in penalties after finishing regulation and overtime scoreless

Aloha 5, South Eugene 1

Adrian Milles scored in each half, and Milos Mavrak had a goal and an assist as the Warriors (13-2-1) won at home to reach the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. They will play host to Grant in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Michael Dunne opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick in the 20th minute. Milles made it 2-0 with a left-footed shot from the top of the penalty area in the 29th minute, and Matthew Castanon scored on a rebound of Mavrak’s shot one minute later.

West Linn 7, Roosevelt 1

Isaac Babalai scored twice, and six Lions found the back of the net as they brought an end to Roosevelt’s Cinderella run and reached the quarterfinals for the third time in the past five years.

Tristan Peia had a goal and assisted on Sohaib Bouika’s opening goal in the 17th minute. Stephen Kerestez, Haaken Retzlaf and Lewis Rumrey also scored for West Linn (10-2-4), which will play Jesuit in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Jesuit 3, McNary 1 (OT)

Logan McGwire scored off a pass from Nathan Peters in the final minute of the first overtime, and McGwire converted off a flick-on from Pablo Salazar midway through the second extra period as the defending champion Crusaders (12-2-2) survived at home.

The Celtics took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game, and it took Jesuit until the 71st minute to equalize on Grant Sasaki’s goal off a feed from Caden Hoppes.

CLASS 5A

La Salle Prep 8, Silverton 2

The Falcons (13-3) exploded for seven goals in the second half to break open a first-round game that was tied 1-1 at halftime. They’ll face defending champion McKay on Saturday in a rematch from last year’s semifinals.

Vala Saghafi’s goal just 15 seconds into the second half opened the floodgates. He finished with two goals and three assists, and Vance Sheffield also had a brace. Eldon Nichols added a goal and an assist, Cooper Eldon, River Nichols and Connor Garvey also scored, and Kevin Serrano Maldanado had three assists.

Sheffield has 31 goals and 10 assists this season. Saghafi has 17 goals and 23 assists, while Maldanado has 18 assists and Eldon Nichols 10.

Anton Mikkelsen scored both goals for the Foxes.

McKay 8, Caldera 0

The defending champion Royal Scots (11-3-1) cruised to the quarterfinals as Miguel Garcia had a hat trick, and Abdoulie Jallow scored twice.

Sergio Ruiz added a goal and two assists, Alexis Manzo had a goal and an assist, and Ethan Ortiz also scored. Jaime Tinajero had a quiet night with no saves in recording the shutout.

Ashland 3, Bend 0

Cash Cota assisted on all three Ashland goals, and Mateo Moore made 11 saves to post the shutout on home turf.

“Mateo played an excellent game, blocking headers and keeping out free kicks,” said Ashland coach Abdiaziz Guled, whose team will play at Summit in Saturday’s quarterfinals. “And the defensive line kept out any real threats.”

Noah Cott opened the scoring 2:10 into the match with his first goal of the season. Quillian Torzan’s eighth goal in the 30th minute gave the Grizzlies (10-2-2) a 2-0 halftime lead, and Luis Caballero-Uhtoff scored 4½ minutes into the second half for his fourth goal of the season.

Summit 9, Centennial 1

Bowen Teuber had two goals and an assist, and Luca Gatto added a goal and two assists as the Intermountain Conference champion Storm (12-1-3) breezed to the first-round home win.

Riley Ring, Ethan Wheeler and Thor Schmidt each had a goal and an assist, and KP Roskowski, Cole Bradley and Zak Bilabrovchik also scored, with Bilabrovchik’s goal with five minutes left ending the game.

Wilsonville 2, Woodburn 0

The 13th-seeded Wildcats (7-7-1) took advantage of a Woodburn own goal before Alex Aguiar scored off an assist from Javier Juarez-Pedraza to build a 2-0 halftime lead.

Diego Macoco made several key saves to hold off Woodburn’s second-half rally and record his fourth shutout of the season and send Wilsonville to a quarterfinal with No. 5 Corvallis on Saturday.

“This was a hard-fought game on both sides,” Wildcats coach Ian Reschke said. “The momentum and ball possession swung in Woodburn’s favor in the second half, but a combination of some missed opportunities and stellar saves helped preserve the shutout.”

Corvallis 2, Thurston 1

Carlos Vega converted a penalty kick early in the second half for the Colts (7-5-3), but it wasn’t enough to get them past the host Spartans (11-2-2).

The other quarterfinal matches top seed Crescent Valley (12-1-2), a 5-0 winner over Churchill, against Hood River Valley (11-4), which ousted 2022 runner-up West Albany 3-1.

CLASS 4A

North Marion 1, Madras 0

Juruen Delgado scored with 15 seconds remaining to lift the ninth-seeded Huskies (10-4-2) to the road win. Sophomore Cole Laninga earned his sixth shutout in net.

North Marion will travel to top seed Henley (12-1-1), a 1-0 winner over Gladstone, in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Newport 3, Seaside 1

Anthony Gonzalez and Roberto Calleja scored three minutes apart late in the first half, and Noah Martinson made a handful of tremendous saves to help the host Cubs (12-1-2) hold off Seaside in a first-round matchup.

Gonzalez scored his 11th goal of the season off a throw-in in the 35th minute, and Calleja scored his second by controlling a throw-in just outside the penalty area and blasting home.

Oliver Peralta capped the scoring with a free-kick goal from 25 yards in the 59th minute, giving him seven goals and eight assists this season.

Estacada 3, Stayton 2

Jose Gonzalez-Felician scored on a breakaway in the first half and converted a penalty that gave the 14th-seeded Rangers a 3-0 lead, and they survived a furious Stayton rally in the closing minutes.

Gener Pinto also scored on a long-range shot for Estacada, and Cole Myers made several critical saves to hold off the Eagles.

The Rangers next face No. 6 Cottage Grove, which ousted last year’s champion, Ontario, 5-3.

“An exhilarating night with the rain pouring down under the lights,” Rangers coach Josh Westermann said. “The crowd was amazing for both sides. A top-notch playoff game.”

Marist Catholic 1, Hidden Valley 0 (SO)

Sophomore Kellen Fitzpatrick made 14 saves during regulation and overtime, then stopped two penalties before converting the winning spot kick in the shootout as the 12th-seeded Spartans (10-3-2) won at Hidden Valley.

It was Fitzpatrick’s fourth shutout of the season and sent Marist Catholic to a quarterfinal with Newport on Saturday.

Crook County 2, Tillamook 1 (OT)

Jaycob Miller scored both goals for the 15th-seeded Cowboys (6-6-4), including the winner six minutes into the first overtime period as they stunned the Cowapa League champion Cheesemakers.

Erik Jacuinde made nine saves for Crook County, which had to win a play-in game Saturday to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Wednesday’s win was the program’s first state playoff victory.

“We set the tempo and dominated the midfield,” said Crook County coach Bryan Housley, who credited his midfield trio of Gabriel Lopez, Eusevio Espino and Andres Rosales as “the engine that kept its foot on the gas. Our hustle and determination were instrumental.”

The Cowboys will travel to No. 10 The Dalles, a 2-1 winner at Pendleton, for Saturday’s quarterfinals. Four double-digit seeds won in Round 1.

CLASS 3A/2A/1A

Westside Christian 4, Dayton 0

Sophomore Alexis Gonzalez opened the scoring off a feed from Brady Housley, and Housley tacked on two second-half goals as the top-seeded Eagles (14-1) rolled to the home win.

Freshman Adam Wachsmuth also scored for Westside Christian, which will take on Blanchet Catholic (11-2-3) — a 5-3 overtime winner over Creswell — in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Oregon Episcopal 5, Umpqua Valley Christian 0

Julian Ettinger had two goals and an assist, and Ben Korngold recorded the clean sheet as the defending champion Aardvarks (11-5-1) eased their way to the quarterfinals for the 11th consecutive year.

Lincoln Weiler, Shay Doshi and Ryder Sendecke also scored for Oregon Episcopal, which will meet McLoughlin (15-0-1) — an 8-0 winner over Brookings-Harbor — on Saturday in a rematch of last year’s state final.

Monarchs keeper Kevin Shaver made 15 saves, including stopping a penalty kick.

Catlin Gabel 6, Delphian/Willamina 1

Senior Raul Rendon Benitez opened and closed the scoring for the Eagles (12-2-1), giving him 11 goals this season, and Papa Diallo added a goal and two assists in a first-round win in Southwest Portland. Diallo also has 11 goals this season.

Leon Liu and Sofiane Smahi added a goal and an assist apiece, and Caleb Reznick scored off a rebound of Levi Whalen-Stewart’s low blast.

“Delphian played hard to the final whistle in a game that was more competitive than the scoreline suggested,” said Catlin Gabel coach Peter Shulman.

Riverside 6, Pacific/Bandon 2

Hugo Ceron got the Pirates going with two goals in the first 20 minutes, Arturo Murguria also had a brace, and Will Killion made two saves as Riverside traveled from Boardman to the South Coast and pulled out the first-round win.

Shalom Mendoza and Luis Rosales also scored for Riverside (10-5).

St. Mary’s (Medford) 5, Riverdale 0

The Special District 5 champion Crusaders (14-1-1) weathered an initial 20-minute barrage from the Mavericks, then took control as Jose Munoz scored on a counterattack to break the deadlock and Leo Cronk recorded a second-half hat trick.

Riverdale saw a potential tying goal cleared off the line early in the second half before Cronk scored three times in a three-minute stretch. His younger brother, Nico, capped the scoring.

The Crusaders will travel to Valley Catholic (12-1-1), which defeated North Valley 5-0, for Saturday’s quarterfinals.
