Oregon high school girls soccer playoffs: Highlights from Day 1; vote for Saturday’s top star

The Oregon high school girls soccer playoffs opened this weekend with first-round action in 6A and 3A/2A/1A. Here are some of the highlights and top performers from the first day of matches.

CLASS 6A

Jesuit 10, Nelson 0 

The defending champion Crusaders (15-0), ranked No. 2 in the nation by United Soccer Coaches, made quick work of the Hawks at Jesuit's Cronin Field as Abby Cox had three goals and an assist, Marian Dunne scored twice, and Kammy McClennan added a goal and three assists.

Claudia Rose, Lana Lee, Hanna Slama and Natalie Webber also scored for Jesuit, and Jo Frischknecht had three assists. 

North Medford 1, Barlow 0 (OT)

Brycelin Endrikat scored off a cross from Olivia Boger with about six minutes left in the second overtime for her second goal of the season, and the 17th-seeded Black Tornado (8-5-1) made it stand up for their first playoff win in the past nine years.

Peyton Caster recorded her fourth shutout for North Medford, which plays at Jesuit in the second round.

Mountainside 2, St. Mary’s Academy 0

The wind wreaked havoc in Southwest Beaverton, but the Mavericks (10-3-2) scored twice in the final four minutes going into the wind to pull out the first-round win over the Blues.

Freshman Anya Rhode broke the deadlock in the 76th minute off an assist from Saki Nakamura, and Carmen Lewis salted away the win three minutes later off a pass from Anya Rhode. Olivia Albers notched her fourth shutout in seven starts since taking over in net against Sunset on Sept. 27.

South Medford 2, Oregon City 0 

Brooke Fairbanks scored her 20th goal of the season in the 11th minute, and Danika Anderson tacked on her fifth of the year with an Olimpico off a corner kick with 11 minutes remaining as the Panthers (9-4-3) eased past the visiting Pioneers.

Avery Zahniser assisted on Fairbanks’ goal, which coach Eduardo Ibarra credited with settling the team’s nerves. McKayla Jordan earned her second shutout in net.

Lincoln 8, McNary 0 

Frances Reuland recorded a hat trick, and Alaina Kennedy had a goal and three assists as the Cardinals (13-2-1) earned the first-round home win. Annabel Porter posted the shutout, with coach Lainey Hulsizer crediting defenders Kennedy Fletcher and Neve Erdman with stepping up to have strong performances in front of Porter.

Grant 8, West Salem 0

The PIL champion Generals (13-2-1) got two goals and an assist from Paige Nakada, while Brooke Wesener also had a brace and Maggie McGair and Nailani Solomon each had a goal and an assist. Bella Bohne and Amalia Held had two assists apiece, and Grant posted its ninth shutout. 

West Linn 4, Newberg 0 

Kate Cheldelin scored six minutes before halftime off a corner kick by Kylee Schreck, and the Lions (11-2-2) scored three times in the second half to pull out the first-round home win. Schreck scored twice in the second half (Bemi Wayland and Reese Jordan had the assists) and assisted on Cassidy Harding’s goal that finished the scoring. Nyamma Nelson had three saves in the shutout. 

Sunset 4, Grants Pass 1 

Oregon State commit and High School All-American Game selection Ellie Felt scored twice in the first half and added an assist as the Apollos (10-3-2) built a 4-0 halftime lead en route to the first-round home win. Melissa Mashek and Terra Folkerts also scored for Sunset. 

Grants Pass averted the shutout with Eden Bolen’s 75th-minute goal. 

Forest Grove 4, Lakeridge 1 

Dania Vivar Reyes scored in each half, and Elise Broberg and Kit Kat Wyborny added first-half goals to lift the Vikings (10-3-2) to the first-round home win. 

Lake Oswego 4, Glencoe 0 

Blake Francis broke a scoreless duel with a header off a corner kick in the 60th minute, and her second goal with 6½ minutes left capped the scoring as the Lakers (10-4-1) won on their home field.

Cleveland 1, Beaverton 0 

Freshman Eleanor Cohen scored the game’s only goal in the 46th minute as the fourth-seeded Warriors (12-1-3) pulled out the home win.

Sprague 1, Wells 0

The Olympians (10-1-3) earned their first playoff win since 2007 on the strength of Laney Cutler’s second-half goal. 

Westview 2, Tigard 1 (SO)

Ashley Giuzio scored the tying goal in the 77th minute, and the Wildcats (7-7-1) went on to beat the Tigers 4-2 in penalties to advance.

CLASS 4A

Molalla 5, Junction City 1 

Emma Hugo recorded a hat trick, and Abbey LaVoie and Kelsee Smith each had a goal and an assist as Molalla (11-4) advanced out of the play-in round to qualify for the state playoffs for the first time since 2019. Tillee Muffett made five saves in the win.

Also advancing out of the play-in round were Pendleton (3-1 over St. Helens), Crook County (1-0 over Klamath Union) and Newport (6-0 over Seaside).

CLASS 3A/2A/1A

Pleasant Hill 1, Riverdale 0 

The Billies (10-5-2) avenged a couple of narrow defeats to Riverdale in each of the past two postseasons, as sophomore Trinity Smead scored off a scrum in the penalty area in the 79th minute for her 10th goal of the season. Sophomore Kenna Caldwell made 12 saves to post her eighth shutout. 

Salem Academy 1, Riverside 0 (SO)

The Pirates (10-4-2) put 20 shots on frame, and Deisy Zavala made nine saves during regulation and overtime, but the 20th-seeded Crusaders (6-5-4) won 4-2 in penalties. Monse Pacheco and Crystal Sanchez made their spot kicks for Riverside. 

“It was a good game, really physical,” said Riverside coach Yvonne Torres. “My girls played well; we just didn’t finish.” 

Oregon Episcopal 8, Western Christian 0 

Freshman Cassidy Paulson scored four goals, including three in a row midway through the first half, and Nina Kaiser added a brace as the nine-time champion Aardvarks (9-6-1) rolled to the home win. Maddie Raymond and senior captain Ettie Teherani-Ami also scored for Oregon Episcopal, with Teherani-Ami’s unassisted goal early in the second half ending the game.
