CLASS 6A

Roosevelt 2, South Medford 1

The 26th-seeded Roughriders (9-6-1) celebrated their first state playoff win in the past eight seasons with pizza before the long bus ride up I-5 after juniors Owen Nathan and Judah Erenyi-Campbell tallied in the first-round win in Medford.

“It was a positive, relaxed environment and feeling accomplished,” said Roosevelt coach Luis Rodriguez. “We will train hard to compete and try to advance more.”

Roosevelt’s victory was one of four road wins by PIL teams in Round 1. The league went 7-0 overall, with Lincoln, Cleveland and Franklin (11-3-2) winning home matches.

Grant (4-9-2), the No. 30 seed, stunned third-seeded Central Catholic 1-0 at Delta Park’s Strasser Field, and No. 29 McDaniel (7-8-1) ousted No. 4 David Douglas 4-3 for its first playoff win since 2009. No. 17 Wells (10-5-1) won at 16th seed Glencoe 2-1.

Cleveland 1, McMinnville 0

Senior Logan Puppo scored with two seconds remaining to lift the Warriors (8-3-5) to victory in Southeast Portland. Puppo volleyed a quick throw-in from Christian Mendoza Soto past the Grizzlies keeper, and Logan’s sophomore brother, Derek, made several key saves to preserve the shutout.

“The game was tight throughout,” Cleveland coach Nick Yoder said. “Both teams had close-range efforts that they didn’t convert.”

Lincoln 3, Beaverton 1

Riley Selman kicked off the scoring for the Cardinals (11-3-2) in the 15th minute off an assist by Kaito Thomavong, and Rafe Westlund and Gunder Miller added second-half goals as the Cardinals advanced with the home win. Sebastian Vallejos Rubio assisted on Westlund’s 50th-minute goal.

Lake Oswego 2, Westview 0

Luca Ridgewell slotted home a penalty kick with nine minutes left in the first half, and Bryson Quintero added a goal in the 35th minute as the Lakers (10-3-2) won at home to oust last year’s state runner-up from the postseason.

Aloha 2, Clackamas 0

Abdouraheem Jallow roofed a cross from Matthew Castanon in the 30th minute for his sixth goal of the season, and Michael Dunne scored on the counterattack with 3:20 remaining to lift the Warriors (12-2-1) past visiting Clackamas. Joshua Meza made two big saves to preserve the shutout for Aloha.

West Linn 2, Liberty 1

Isaac Babalai’s second goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining lifted the Lions (9-2-4) to the first-round home win. Babalai, who has 12 goals this season, scored midway through the first half off an assist by Haaken Retzlaff. Aidan Bartko made six saves for West Linn.

South Eugene 3, Sherwood 0

Levi Hawes scored in the 13th minute, and Tomas Serrano scored twice in a two-minute span late in the first half as the Axe (10-3-3) won at home, limiting the Bowmen to two second-half shots while Tate Glock (four saves) recorded his seventh shutout of the season.

CLASS 4A

Gladstone 2, Klamath Union 1

Tyler Ash recorded a brace, including the winner with 4½ minutes remaining as the Gladiators (4-7-4) rallied for the play-in victory in Klamath Falls to advance to the state playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Ash answered the Pelicans’ penalty kick goal eight minutes after halftime with a spot kick of his own with 14 minutes to play. Robby Nordby made a clutch save with three minutes left to preserve the victory.

Crook County 3, Scappoose 0

Junior Jaycob Miller scored twice, and the host Cowboys (5-6-4) ousted Scappoose despite a combined 14 saves from goalkeepers Brandon Sailer and Saxton Squires.

“The kid is a linebacker with pace and ability to control the ball,” Scappoose coach Andy Deuker said of Miller. “Any team would like him to play for them, and he is surrounded by young wingers who play without fear and with pace.”

Other play-in winners were Estacada (4-1 over Marshfield) and North Marion (6-1 over La Grande).

CLASS 3A/2A/1A

Dayton 5, Siuslaw/Mapleton 2

Brookings-Harbor 2, Santiam Christian 1

Max David scored his 21st goal of the season for the Eagles, but it wasn’t enough to lift them to a first-round win at Brookings-Harbor. Josh Riddle made 10 saves for Santiam Christian.

Delphian/Willamina 2, Sisters 1

Memo Cervantes scored twice, including a rocket from outside the box that Dragons coach JJ Gonzalez described as a goal of the year candidate, and Cato Matsuoka stopped a potential tying penalty kick late in a first-round home win.
