Brian Hales steps down at Butler (North Carolina) after two decades: Report

Hales led the Bulldogs to a 12-2 record in 2023

Another day and another tenured high school head football coach is stepping away from the sidelines. 

According to a report by The Herald’s Langston Wertz Jr., Brian Hales of officially stepping down as head coach at Butler High School after 20 seasons at the helm. 

“My son (17-year old Cooper) is going to graduate (from Butler) in June. And it’s time. I’m 50 and the back 9 is looking me right in the face, and I’ve got to figure out what I’m going to do before I’m too old to do it,” Hales said per the report. 

During his time as the lead man of the Bulldogs, Hales compiled an overall record of 131-34 and won three state titles. The report stated Hales had never experienced a losing season and never lost more than four games. 

Back in 2012 was at the top of the mountain when it came elite programs. Hales led the program to an undefeated mark at 15-0 and a NCHSAA state championship.
