Darryn Peterson has successful homecoming with Huntington Prep

The junior returned home to Canton, Ohio and helped lead Huntington Prep with a win over Richmond Heights

CANTON, Ohio - Darryn Peterson returned home on Saturday, even if just for one night, as the Canton native helped lead Huntington Prep (West Virginia) to a 66-54 win over Richmond Heights (Ohio) at the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse.

Peterson, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard who is considered a 5-star recruit and the No. 3 player in the 2025 class by 247Sports, finished with 26 points, five rebounds and four assists.

"It was nice to do it in front of family and for everybody that came out," Peterson said. "I just lost my grandma so I tried to come back and do it for her."

It was evident in the third quarter who the crowd was there to see, as Huntington Prep's Anthony Gilkes and Peterson had a 2-on-0 break with Gilkes ahead of Peterson. When Gilkes scored a layup instead of passing to Peterson, the crowd booed.

"He thought I said go up but I was saying throw it up," Peterson said with a laugh. "But it's all love, we got the basket.

While he is from Canton, he spent his first two high school seasons at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Ohio, where he averaged 31 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.3 assists last season as a sophomore and was a finalist for the Ohio Mr. Basketball Award before transferring to Huntington Prep prior to this season.

Peterson feels like the move has made him a better basketball player.

"Just being able to play with other good guys," Peterson said. "At CVCA, they looked to me a bit more I would say just because the skill wasn't all the way there but here everybody got game, so just creating for myself and others and using them and  having them use me."
