Torrey Pines Holiday Classic: Division recaps, all-tournament selections, top scorers
SAN DIEGO — The 33rd Torrey Pines Holiday Classic boys’ basketball tournament concluded Saturday at five high schools across San Diego County.
Here's a recap from the final day of the tournament.
National Division
Carlsbad held off a second half run from Faith Family (Texas) to win the National Division championship, 78-69. Junior guard Jake Hall took home MVP honors after scoring 29 points.
St. Augustine went back and forth with Archbishop Mitty in the third place game and secured the win with a last second putback by senior Isaiah Hasten. Saints guards Ian De La Rosa and Jaden Bailes earned all-tournament selections with huge shooting performances throughout the event.
American Division
Canyon View (Arizona) came into the Holiday Classic having scored 107 and 129 points in their previous two games and parlayed that momentum to the title. The Jaguars jumped out early against Crespi in the American Division championship game and held off a late run from the Celts for a 76-67 victory.
Bellarmine took down Clayton Valley Charter 60-56 in the third place game with senior forward Nick Corbett being named to the all-tournament team.
Senator’s Division
La Costa Canyon won their first three tournament games by double digits and got past Long Beach-St. Anthony in the championship game, 62-59. Senior Drew Clevenger was named MVP of the bracket.
Prescott (Arizona) got past Rancho Buena Vista 58-56 in the third place game. Junior guard Uriah Tenette had a huge week, scoring 30 points or more in each game on his way to 139 total points.
Governor’s Division
Danville-Monte Vista came up big throughout the week, winning four games by a total of 11 points. They took down Santa Fe Christian 67-65 in the title game. Senior guard Daniel Cojocaru had 15 points in the final game, earning bracket MVP honors.
La Jolla Country Day edged out Punahou (Hawaii) 61-58 in the third place game with junior guard Chris Carrillo taking home all-tournament honors.
Mayor’s Division
Sonora took down LACES in the championship game, 52-39. The Raiders were dominant throughout the bracket, winning by an average of more than 15 points per game. Senior guards Ricky Esparza and Eric Castillo shared MVP honors in the bracket.
