Servite beats Long Beach Poly in OT: Live updates recap

Overtime thriller goes Servite's way, with the Friars advancing to the semifinals

The first half was full of fireworks and the second half was a chess match, but Servite prevailed in overtime Friday night over Long Beach Poly at Cerritos College.

Servite advances to the semifinals of the Division 2 Southern Section high school football playoffs in California after a 27-20 win in overtime.

Quaid Carr led Servite with 20 carries for 121 yards and scored what proved to be the winning 18-yard touchdown in overtime.

Long Beach Poly had a touchdown called back by a penalty in overtime that would have tied the game with the extra point, and then a fumble ended the game.

Servite will play next at Gardena Serra, which beat Los Alamitos on Friday night.

PREGAME READING

Long Beach Poly (10-1) escaped with a 30-21 win last week over Vista Murrieta despite Darius Curry throwing two pick-sixes.

Servite doubled up Valencia 48-24 last week to push its record to 6-5 under new coach Chris Reinert, just a year removed from finishing 1-9.

Both teams have faced some stiff competition, with Long Beach Poly's only loss this season coming against national No. 1 Bishop Gorman, while Servite has lost to Mater Dei and St. John Bosco and beaten Santa Margarita.
