Marshall beats Delano in Class 3A Minnesota volleyball state championship

Marshall wins its ninth title in school history

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA — The No. 1-seed Marshall Tigers (30-5) defeated the No. 2-seed Delano Tigers (30-3) 25-22, 25-13, 25-19 in the Class 3A MSHSL volleyball tournament on Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.

It's the ninth state title, and second in a row, in school history for Marshall.

"Every team is different," Marshall head coach Dan Westby said. "This team is different from what we had a year ago. … We hope to ascend to this point, but you never know. This team peaked at the right time."

Delano gave Marshall trouble toward the end of the first set, but Marshall held on and dominated Delano in the second set.

"We fought for each other that entire match," senior Brielle Riess said.

It was Delano's first state title appearance since 2013.

"We cant hang our heads at all after that match," Delano head coach Becca Rue said. "We’ve had an amazing season."
