Wayzata defeats New Prague in Class 4A Minnesota volleyball championship game

The Trojans won their fourth consecutive state title

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA — The No. 1-seed Wayzata Trojans (34-0) defeated the No. 2-seed New Prague Trojans (27-6) 25-20, 25-23, 26-24 in the Class 4A Minnesota high school volleyball state tournament championship on Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.

It's Wayzata's fourth straight state title and they complete an undefeated season. Wayzata led in the first and second sets, but it trailed in the third set until taking the lead at 25-24.

"I’m really proud of these guys," Wayata head coach Scott Jackson said. "They faced down everything that comes with that undefeated season on the line and being the clear favorite and just doing it together."

Wayzata has won 46 sets in a row, but New Prague made them earn the three sets Wayzata had to win tonight.

"They changed some tempo of their offense that caused our defense to be on the move still," Jackson said. "Kudos to them for doing something to change them. New Prague might be the best serving team we’ve seen this season. … It’s hard to get runs on us, but they got a couple runs on us."

Senior outside hitter Olivia Swenson finished with 14 kills and five digs while junior middle Katie Kelzenbeg finished with 10 kills.

It's the end of a special season for Wayzata. The Trojans went undefeated, and the seniors graduating have been leaders on what finishes as one of the top Minnesota high school volleyball teams of all time.

The senior captains—Gabby Fish, Bianca Nistor and Olivia and Stella Swenson—all huddled in the media room and embraced as they left.

"Wayzata volleyball has been an amazing experience for me," Stella Swenson said. "I‘ve been so blessed to play for [Jackson] and for my teammates, and they will be my lifelong friends.”
