ANNAPOLIS – Stephen Decatur capped an undefeated season, Thursday night, with a 21-13 win over Huntingtown in the MPSSAA Class 2A state championship game at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.

The win produced the first football state championship in school history.

The Seahawks (14-0) built a 14-0 first half lead as Vanderbilt-bound quarterback Brycen Coleman rushed for a 4-yard touchdown and then completed a short TD toss to Trybe Wise.

Huntingtown (10-3) got its offense going on the first possession of the second half, as the Hurricanes drove for a touchdown and scored on a 6-yard run by Landon Cawley, to cut the Decatur lead in half, at 14-7.

Coleman was not perfect on the night, as he was intercepted three times, but he was certainly clutch. He answered the Huntingtown TD with a short touchdown run, around right end, to cap a 68-yard drive.

Huntingtown followed with its second touchdown drive as quarterback Evan Kuntz started the march with a 53-yard run, late in the third quarter, and capped it with a short touchdown pass to Trent Depompa, early in the fourth.

The Hurricanes, however, missed the extra-point and trailed, 21-13, with just over 11 minutes to play.

Both defenses picked up the pace from there, but the Hurricanes did make things interesting in the final three minutes as they drove from deep in their own territory to the Decatur 21.

A penalty and a sack pushed the Canes back to the 40, and they eventually turned it over on downs when a fourth down pass was broken up at the 10, clinching the state title for the Seahawks.
