Citrus head football coach John Capel Jr. under investigation

Capel Jr. was named as the Hurricanes' head coach back on Dec. 8

Citrus head football coach John Capel Jr., a former world class sprinter who has been on the job less than six months, is reportedly under investigation according to a report by Citrus County Chronical sports editor Matt Pfiffner

Per Pfiffner's report, Capel is being investigated by the Citrus County School District. The investigation was confirmed by Citrus County district spokeswoman Lindsay Blair who stated there's an "open and active investigation." However, no specifics were given by Blair on the nature of the investigation.

This is the second time in less than six months that a head football coach at Citrus has been under investigation. Former head coach Joshua Ross resigned after just six games at the helm of the school's football program, while being investigated for having an unsupervised locker room when a fight broke out in the locker between Citrus players.

Rumors are circulating that a fight may be at the heart of the current investigation, but SBLive Sports has been unable to confirm this information. When reached by phone Capel said he could not speak, but asked SBLive to text him its questions. However, he did not respond to multiple texts.

Capel Jr. was a football and track star at Hernando High School and played two seasons at the University of Florida before dedicating himself to his track career. He won a gold medal in the 200-meters at the 2003 World Championships and, in 2005, he returned to the World Championships and won a bronze medal in the same event.
