Two weeks into the 2023 high school football season and already things are getting interesting.

Miami Central traveled to Las Vegas and lost a thriller to Bishop Gorman, 39-35, in a game with national championship implications. St. Thomas Aquinas bounced back from its setback to California powerhouse St. John Bosco and rolled past Fort Myers, 49-0.

In Broward County, Chaminade-Madonna made its mark on both sides of the ball in a convincing 41-4 road win against a strong Cardinal Gibbons squad.

Those are just some of the headlines of an eventful week.

Now it’s time to decide which players stood out in our weekly SBLive Sports South Florida Offensive Football Player of the Week poll. Voting concludes on September 9 at 11:59 p.m. Vote now!

South Florida Offensive Player of the Week

Congratulations to last week's winner: Jordan Jones, Miramar.

Here are this week's nominees.

Agyeman Addae, RB, Columbus: Addae ran for 104 yards on 12 carries (8.7 yards per carry) in the Explorers’ 38-0 win against Killian. The junior added a touchdown run.

Anthony Barbar, QB, Westminster Academy: Barbar hooked up with Evan Tempro for a 90-yard touchdown pass, and then he completed a two-point conversion pass to Dwayne Wimbley for the decisive points in a 24-17 win over American Heritage Delray Beach. Barbar was 20-for-27 for 376 yards and three TDs.

Mason Chapman, QB, North Broward Prep: The Eagles fell 48-21 to Archbishop McCarthy, but Chapman had an impressive game. The sophomore was 22-for-36 for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Jayden Gonzalez, QB, Pembroke Pines Charter: A 6-foot-3 junior, Gonzalez threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 24-22 victory over Coral Springs Charter. Gonzalez has thrown for 515 yards in two games.

Andrew Indorf, QB, St. Thomas Aquinas: The Raiders bounced back from their opening loss to St. John Bosco by routing Fort Myers, 49-0. Indorf connected on scoring passes to Richard Compton and Chance Robinson.

Lawayne McCoy, WR, Miami Central: Central’s 26-game win streak came to an end with a 39-35 loss to Bishop Gorman in a battle of national powers in Las Vegas. McCoy, a Florida State commit, caught a 13-yard TD pass for the Rockets.

James Perrone, QB, Southridge: Southridge pulled out a 27-22 win against Dr. Krop. Perrone, a freshman, was 7-for-9 for 134 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 20 yards.

Noah Sidan, PK, Miami Norland: The Vikings are a complete team, which was evident in a 66-0 victory against Carol City. We’re recognizing place kicker, Noah Sidan, a sophomore, who converted all eight of his extra point attempts.

Jeremiah Smith, WR, Chaminade-Madonna: The 5-star receiver and Ohio State commit caught seven passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in a 41-4 victory against Cardinal Gibbons.

Leon Strawder, QB, Miami Northwestern: Strawder, a sophomore, connected with receiver Calvin Russell Jr. for a 5-yard TD pass in the first quarter and the Bulls never looked back in a 63-0 blowout of Miami Jackson.

Malachi Toney, WR, American Heritage: The sophomore sensation and Miami commit came up big in a decisive 28-6 decision against Trinity Christian Academy, catching four passes for 124 yards (31 yards per catch average) and two touchdowns.

Joshua Townsend, QB, Homestead: Chances are you will be seeing Townsend nominated for top weekly honors often because the senior signal caller is just that good. In a 35-0 shutout of South Dade, Townsend threw for four touchdowns and rushed for 95 yards.

Jett Yurgealitis, QB, NSU University School: Listed at 6-foot-2, 185-pounds, the senior signal caller enjoyed a huge night in a 58-14 rout of Pine Crest. On target, Yurgealitis was 19-for-26 for 314 yards and five touchdowns, and he rushed for another.
