The 2023 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section high school football playoffs kick off Friday, November 3, and you can follow all of the action on SBLive Sports.

Here is everything you need to know about the first round of the SJS Division I football playoffs, including how to watch games, live scoreboards, bracket updates and matchup breakdowns.

The matchup breakdowns were written by CIF Sac-Joaquin Section assistant commissioner Will DeBoard, who covered California high school sports for 17 years (1992 to 2009) for the Modesto Bee, before joining the SJS as its first Director of Communications in 2009. He was promoted to assistant commissioner in 2017.

During his time as a scribe, he was considered at the top of his craft and won numerous state and national awards for his coverage. His notes, facts and analysis of all things high school sports is flawless. 

DIVISION I BRACKET

There are six league champions in this field, led by top seed Folsom (the Sierra Foothill League winners) and the No. 2 seed, Central Catholic (Valley Oak League). … The Delta League has three teams in this field. ... Teams with byes: No. 1 Folsom, No. 2 Central Catholic, No. 3 Oak Ridge, No. 4 Monterey Trail.

  • No. 9 Cosumnes Oaks (5-5) at No. 8 Lincoln-S (6-4): Cosumnes Oaks is in the playoffs for the first time since 2019. CO took third place in the Delta League and is in the postseason for the ninth time in school history. Lincoln-S is In the playoffs for the fourth year in a row. The Trojans took third place in the TCAL and are in the playoffs for the 32nd time in school history. These teams have met in the playoffs once before, a 67-27 Cosumnes Oaks victory in the Division I first round in 2015.

  • No. 12 Pleasant Grove (4-6) at No. 5 Inderkum (9-1): Pleasant Grove returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. The Eagles finished in fifth place in the Delta League and are in the postseason for the 10th time in school history. Inderkum, the Capital Valley Conference champion, is in the playoffs for the 16th straight season. The Tigers have yet to win a Section championship, but they've advanced into the second round 14 of the previous 15 years.

  • No. 11 Sheldon (5-5) at No. 6 Turlock (5-5): Sheldon is in the playoffs for the third straight year. The Huskies took fourth place in the Delta League and are in the postseason for the 10th time in school history. Turlock won the Central California Athletic League to get here and is in the playoffs for the ninth year in a row. The Bulldogs are here for the 19th time in school history. These teams have met in the playoffs once before: Sheldon beat Turlock 36-22 in the 2021 D1 first round.

  • No. 10 Gregori (7-3) at No. 7 Edison (8-2): Gregori is in the playoffs for the ninth straight year and it's also the ninth time in school history the Jaguars have gotten here. Gregori placed third in the CCAL to get here via at-large berth. Edison is in the SJS postseason for the sixth time in a row and 10th time in school history. The Vikings, winners of the SJAA, are looking for their first playoff victory since 2019. These teams met in the SJS postseason once before; in the 2018 D1 first round, Edison beat Gregori 52-7.
