Angelou's Gary Parks voted SBLive's California Football Coach of the Week by fans (10/11/2023)

The Phoenix moved to a program-best 7-0 start with a win over Diego Rivera in Week Six

Welcome to the golden era of Dr. Maya Angelou Community football.

The Phoenix are having the best season in their brief history, and they're just getting started. 11 years after the founding of their football program, coming off a 4-6 year in which they swept the Southern League, the Phoenix are emphatically having their first-ever winning season.

On Sept. 29, Angelou rolled to a 55-16 victory over Diego Rivera – which took them to double-overtime last season – to start the year 7-0. Sophomore Nicholas Quintanilla turned just eight carries into 128 yards and three touchdowns, ran for a conversion, had three catches for 57 yards, and registered two tackles and two pass break-ups.

For Angelou's win, fans voted head coach Gary Parks as SBLive's California Coach of the Week. Parks received 76.8-percent of the vote with 1,580 votes.

In Week Seven, Angelou followed up the Diego Rivera victory with a 27-8 win over Los Angeles High School that unofficially clinched a second straight conference title. The Phoenix have a Week Eight bye, and will then look to complete the undefeated regular season against Sotomayor and West Adams.

Northview's Marcel Perez came in second place with 16.9-percent of votes. With a 14-13 win over Bonita in Week Six, Northview (6-1) locked itself in as the top-ranked public school squad in the San Gabriel Valley until proven otherwise.
