SAN MATEO, Calif. — It was the first time De La Salle has been shutout in almost 20 years. It was the storied program's worst shutout loss in 44 seasons.
Serra's 28-0 win over the Spartans was spurred by the Padres' vaunted, talented and experienced defense. Perhaps its best in school history, though last season's was pretty good, allowing just 192 in 14 games (13-1 record). Of those, 45 were scored by national No. 1 St. John Bosco.

The leader of the defense, All-State safety Joseph Bey offered his opinion on why the team is so stout on that side of the ball. It helps that nine of them returned from last season.
Bey, a long, physical and fast 6-foot-1, 185-pounder, is a four-year letterman who is headed to San Jose State. He was polite, thoughtful and measured during this segment of SBLive's 2-minute drill in the interview above.
