Highlights: Oak Ridge holds off Madison 22-20 in opening game of 2023 Honor Bowl

Oak Ridge stopped Madison's two-point conversion attempt in the final minute of Friday's game

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) traveled south to the San Diego Section on Friday and emerged with a 22-20 victory over Madison in the first of five games this weekend at the Honor Bowl.

Oak Ridge opened the scoring with a 27-yard field goal less than two minutes into the second quarter and added two more touchdowns in the quarter to head into the halftime break with a 16-7 lead.

Dominant defense from both teams during the first 12 minutes of the second half led to a scoreless third quarter. Madison completed a pass to running back Jaylon Brown on the first play of the fourth quarter, leading to an 18-yard touchdown that cut the Oak Ridge lead to 16-14. The Trojans responded right away with a 65-yard touchdown drive but had the extra-point attempt blocked, keeping Madison within one score at 22-14.

The two teams traded punts, resulting in Madison taking over from their own 27-yard line with less than two minutes left to play. The Warhawks didn't waste much time, launching a wide receiver pass from Xavier Quintanar to Zagar Aiken that resulted in a 54-yard touchdown. Madison's attempt at a two-point conversion to tie the game was stuffed immediately, preserving Oak Ridge's lead.

Madison's attempt at an onside kick traveled out of bounds, allowing the Trojans to take a knee and prevail with a two-point win.
