SPOKANE — On the opening day of the 1B Washington High School Boys Basketball State Tournament, seventh-ranked Mossyrock was moments away from elimination. A 21-point fourth quarter and a Tyce Vigre jumper in the final seconds saved the Vikings season.

Two days later and Mossyrock’s title hopes, which would be a program first, are still alive after the Vikings defeated No. 4 DeSales 58-54 in the 1B State semifinals on Friday.

It was again Tyce Vigre leading the way, with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Senior Zack Munoz added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

“It’s a once in a lifetime thing,” Munoz said. “If we win this, it’ll make history forever. It feels amazing.”

With a lead as large as 17 points in the first half, the Vikings again had to face more pressure-packed moments than they would have wished. DeSales, behind three double-digit scoring efforts, closed the gap to one point before Vigre’s 3-pointer made it 55-51 with little more than a minute left.

“We just have to stay calm and do our thing,” Munoz said of the stressful moments this week. “A lot of people tend to freak out in those tight situations.”

Spencer Green (14 points), Daniel Balof (14) and Cade McCollaugh led the Irish.

Mossyrock, which also knocked off top seed Lummi in the quarterfinals, will play the winner of No. 2 Wellpinit and No. 5 Neah Bay in the school’s first title game appearance since 2016, then a 2B school.
