Lynden doubles up Lynden Christian, 66-33, in girls basketball rivalry game

Lions hold Lyncs to just 13 points in the second half to claim first game over Lynden Christian since 2018-19 season

LYNDEN, Wash. — What was a mostly competitive first half turned into a one-way track meet in the second half with the Lynden girls basketball team taking down city rival Lynden Christian, 66-33.

The Lions led 29-20 at halftime and blew the game wide open shortly into the second half, scoring the first eight points of the third quarter in less than three minutes.

Lynden's big run in the second half forced Lynden Christian into using all but one of its timeouts before the third quarter was over.

Ninth-grader Finley Parcher led the Lions with a game-high 19 points. Sophomore Payton Mills added 11.

Junior Allison Shumate scored a team-high 10 points for the Lyncs. Shumate was the only Lynden Christian player to score in double-figures.

Here are three takeaways from the Lynden-Lynden Christian game:

LIONS RISE TO THE OCCASION

It's been a long time coming for Lynden.

Coming into Saturday's game, the last time the Lions had beaten the Lyncs was the 2018-19 season.

Knowing a big crowd would be on hand for the annual rivalry game, Adams said his team met the moment.

"It was a great team win and we were really excited about how we stayed connected together," Adams said. "We had one other big game this year where the crowd was like this over at Nooksack (Valley). It was really early in the season...and we didn't play with a lot of poise."

LYNDEN DEFENSE PUTS ON CLINIC IN SECOND HALF

While the Lions' didn't have a terrible first-half defensively, they absolutely turned it up a notch in the second half, holding the Lyncs to just 13 points.

Lynden held Lynden Christian standout Grace Hintz to just three points in the game and didn't give those points up until there was a minute left in the third quarter.

"It's a team defensive philosophy, but it really starts with Kiki York," Adams said. "The job she did with Grace Hintz was just incredible. She held Grace to three (points) and to do that to that level of a players speaks a lot about how Kiki works."

TOUGH NIGHT ALL AROUND FOR THE LYNCS

Despite being able to hang around with Lynden for the first half, it was mostly a night Lynden Christian would like to forget.

The Lyncs' offense never found a consistent groove on offense and found itself on the wrong side of easy baskets in the second half.

"They pressure the ball really well, they do a great job of taking away your space, so nothing was easy for us," Lynden Christian coach Brady Bomber said. "There wasn't a lot of space for us to get to the rim, we weren't finding shots that were open, we stalled out a lot of our actions we were trying to gain for advantages."
