2024 MLK holiday basketball: King's vs. White RIver

Mount Si boys 63, Roosevelt 38

Sophomore Latt Ford scored a game-high 21 points, senior Trevor Hennig added 20 and the Mount Si Wildcats rolled to a dominant 63-38 win over Roosevelt.

Originally scheduled to play Tualatin out of Oregon, the Wildcats had to pivot when the Timberwolves weren't able to make the trip up because of the weather.

The change of opponent didn't matter as Mount Si was able to showcase its high flying offense from the first whistle.

The Wildcats shot 48.1% from the field and showed off on the defensive end, holding Roosevelt to 28.6% shooting.

2024 MLK holiday basketball: King's vs. Lynden

Enumclaw girls 58, Kennedy Catholic 35

Having to jump in as a replacement game at the last-minute didn't seem to bother Enumclaw at all, as it out-played Kennedy Catholic in just about every facet in a 58-35 win.

Gracie Finkoess led the Hornets with 11 points, Natalie DeMarco scored nine and led the team in rebounds with five, while Camryn Thomas and Emma Holt each contributed eight.

The Hornets got ahead early, outscoring the Lancers 21-9 in the first quarter.

Kennedy Catholic shot just 30.6% from the field and was led by Riley Burns who scored a game-high 17 points.

Lynden boys 64, King's 39

2024 King Showcase: Lynden-King's

Lynden held King's to its lowest scoring total all season in a 64-39 win in a battle of the two-time defending Class 2A champion and the Class 1A runner-up the last two seasons.

Senior Anthony Canales scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Lions.

King's girls 52, White River 49 (OT)

2024 King Showcase: White River-King's

An early lead over White River quickly evaporated for King's, but the Knights were able to wipe away a 12-point deficit in the second half to outlast the Hornets, 52-49 in overtime.

Trailing 9-2 in the first quarter, the Hornets' offense couldn't seem to buy a bucket, but a 10-2 run to end the frame gave White River a slim 12-11 lead after eight minutes.

After trading baskets for much of the second quarter, the Hornets found a bit of a run to close out the first half with a 30-24 lead.

The Hornets built their lead up to double digits in the third quarter, but the Knights answered with a fiery comeback bid to erase the deficit and eventually retake the lead in the fourth quarter.

That strong fourth quarter by the Knights forced overtime where they outlasted the Hornets to walk away with the win.

2024 MLK holiday basketball: King's vs. Lynden

Enumclaw boys 36, Kent-Meridian 34

There wasn't a ton of offense to go around, but Enumclaw mustered just enough in a narrow win over Kent-Meridian.

The come-from-behind effort from the Hornets was spearheaded by Wyatt Neu who scored a game-high 16 points and brought down seven rebounds coming off the bench.

Kent-Meridian jumped out to the early lead scoring the first eight points of the game, marking the largest lead the Royals would have all morning.

Trailing by three points heading into the fourth quarter, Enumclaw held the Royals to just two points in the final frame.

Only four players scored for Kent-Meridian with Julius Graham pouring in a game-high 16 points.

Bothell 57, Caruthers (CA) 55 (OT)

2024 MLK Day hoops: Caruthers vs. Bothell

A few days ago, McKylee Hawkins won a game in overtime with a last-second shot.

On Monday, she did it another way - with a blocked shot.

Hawkins' cleanly swatted away a game-winning 3-point attempt from the right corner, and the Cougars held off the 2019 state champions from California.

"I was trying not to hit her body," Hawkins said. "I tried by going to the side (on the follow through)."

Bothell broke a 55-55 tie on Makenzie Kooy's inside basket on a nifty feed from Yuna McConnell with nine seconds to go in overtime.

MLK 'THE DREAM' SHOWCASE

Eastside Catholic boys 64, Richland 63

Jacob Cofie Eastside Catholic Taylor Balkom 7

Jacob Cofie, a University of Virginia signee, ran interference when time was ticking down on his team, Eastside Catholic, the top-ranked team in Class 3A.

That allowed senior teammate Kayden Greene to steal a little limelight.

Greene knocked down what turned out to be the game-winning 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left as the Crusaders rallied for a gritty victory over Richland, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, on Monday at the MLK “The Dream” Showcase at Federal Way High School.

On the final possession for Eastside Catholic (13-1), Cofie dribbled out top and when the defense went with him, Cofie found an open Greene, who finished with 13 points and three 3-pointers.

EC made six 3-pointers to rally from a nine-point first-half deficit and a six-point third-quarter hole. Cofie led the Crusaders with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Richland (8-3) was led by the 24 points of Landen Northrop, who drilled five 3-pointers. Jack Forbes and Josh Woodard added 12 points apiece.

The Bombers called timeout with 4.2 seconds remaining and had two chances to get off a game-winning shot, but failed to do so with inbounds passes.

Lake Washington girls 47, Sumner 40

2022-23 Washington girls basketball: Lake Washington vs. Arlington, Class 2A semifinals

Another big test. Another better-than-average passing grade for the Lake Washington girls basketball team.

The Kangaroos, ranked No. 5 in Class 3A, knew that facing Sumner, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, was no easy task.

Junior guard Paige Citron made sure Lake Washington finished strong, draining a pair of timely 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter as the Kangs downed the Spartanson Monday at Federal Way High School.

LW is the three-time defending Class 3A state runner-up. It’s performances like Monday that could help them break through for the school’s first state title after three consecutive losses in championship games.

Citron, who has played in the last two 3A title games, helped the Kangs shake off Sumner (14-1) and hand the Spartans their first loss of the season. She converted a pair of dagger 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter just 28 seconds apart, sinking one with 6:15 left in the game and another with 5:47 to play for a 41-34 cushion.

Sophomore Ashley Uusitalo led the Kangs with 14 points and freshman Julia Benthin chipped in 10 points. Citron finished with eight points.

Emerald Ridge girls 60, Eastlake 55

2022 Washington girls basketball: Emerald Ridge vs. Tahoma

Senior guard Naomi Senato had 15 points and the ninth-ranked Jaguars (10-5) upset the defending Class 4A state champions, building a big lead late and hanging on at Federal Way High School.

Krista Kostoff scored on a layin for fourth-ranked Eastlake (10-6) to pull her team with 58-53 with 1:02 remaining, but Emerald Ridge made enough plays late to seal the victory.

Sofia Aluas led the Wolves with 16 points and Tatum Wood added 15.

Naleila Cammack added 11 points for the Jaguars.

Both 4A teams had players suffer significant injuries in the second half. First, freshman forward Raymiah Jackson of Emerald Ridge fell to the floor with 4:57 showing in the third quarter, screaming out in pain with an apparent leg injury.

Then, at the 2:03 mark of the fourth quarter, Eastlake’s Alaus hit the bleachers scrambling for a loose ball and was helped to the locker room putting no weight on her right leg. Alaus also appeared to hit her face and head on the bleachers in the fall.
