Congratulations to Adna's Karsyn Freeman for being voted SBLive’s WaFd Bank Washington High School Athlete of the Week for Dec. 25-Dec. 30!

As far as small-school holiday basketball tournaments are concerned, there aren't better to win than the Mount Vernon Christian tournament. And the Pirates had to navigate a strong field to win the tournament title. Freeman was at the forefront of the journey as the junior tallied team-high 25-point totals against both Crosspoint and reigning Class 1B champion Neah Bay as the event's top player.

Freeman received 49.2% of the vote, beating out W.F. West boys basketball standout Tyler Klatush, who finished second with 39.3%.

WASHINGTON NOMINEES

Dalton Brown, Tahoma boys basketball: Bears played three competitive games (1-2 record) at Classic at Damien - and their top scorer poured in a season-high 33 points in a loss to San Tan Charter (CA) to cap off the tournament. He scored 20 points in a tournament win over Skyridge (UT).

Mia Brockmeyer, Meadowdale girls basketball: Sophomore guard scored a career-high 37 points, sinking seven 3-pointers as the 3A Wesco-leading Mavericks handled Hazen in a non-league game.

Devin Coppinger, Nooksack Valley girls basketball: UW-bound guard had three big days at the "Top of the Peak" tournament, scoring 25 points in the opening-round win over Seattle Prep, 14 points in semifinal win over touted Mead and 22 points in the championship-game loss to Lake City of Idaho.

Addison Harris, Camas girls basketball: Montana State University-bound forward led all scorers with 27 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Papermakers nearly upset No. 16 Mater Dei (CA), losing 58-56 at the POA Holiday Classic in Portland.

Laiken Hill, West Valley of Yakima girls basketball: Guard set program's single-game scoring record by amassing 38 points, including seven 3-pointers, in a lopsided win over Federal Way on the final day of the Gesa Winter Shootout in Wenatchee. The previous mark was 36 points, set by Nicole Trammell (1994).

Keira Johnson, Forks girls basketball: Guard became the school's all-time leading scorer when she tallied 26 points in a victory over Lummi at the Mount Vernon Christian holiday tournament. The previous record of 1,303 points was owned by Madison Justice (2008).

Tyler Klatush, W.F. West boys basketball: Senior guard had the shooting stroke going, pouring in a career-high 37 points, including seven 3-pointers, in the Bearcats' win over Prosser at the SunDome Shootout. Also had 21 points, including five 3-pointers, in a tournament win over Ellensburg.

Zach Luz, Mount Rainier boys basketball: Fresh off a season-high 40-point effort against Bonney Lake before Christmas, Luz scored 39 - his sixth 30-point game of the season - in a non-league win over Fife.

Steve Romero, Toppenish wrestling: Reigning Class 1A 106-pound champion continued his torrid start in 2023-24 by pinning his way to the 113 title at the "Gut Check" tournament in Kent. Romero pinned Lincoln's Josh Larkins in the finals in 3:04 as the Wildcats captured the team title with 296.5 points.

Isaiah White, Everett boys basketball: Senior scored 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting (and season-high four 3-pointers) in a loss to Cleveland Heights (OH) at Cactus Jam, then tallied 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting in a win over reigning Class 4A runner-up Olympia.
