Who was the top high school athlete in Texas last week?

Throughout the year, SBLive takes a look at the top high school athletes across the Lone Star State each week, gathering the top performers and putting the best of the best up for reader vote.

We're splitting our Athlete of the Week process up in order to spotlight more of the scores of tremendous performances across Texas at the beginning of each week across every sport except football (which has its own statewide offensive and defensive football player of the week polls).

TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NOMINEES (11/20/2023)

Averi Aaron, Boerne girls basketball

The Louisiana Tech pledge has 21 points to help the Lady Greyhounds improve to 3-0 on the season with a 77-32 win over Stevens.

Gentry Barker, Lucas Lovejoy volleyball

The freshman had 17 kills and 11 digs to help the Leopards beat Liberty Hill in the Class 5 finals on Saturday.

Marshall Cannon, College Station A&M Consolidated boys wrestling

Cannon went 4-0 with four pins on Saturday at the 6th Annual Carlos Molina Tournament in Houston. That gave him first place in the 150-pound division.

Aaliyah Chavez, Lubbock Monterey girls basketball

The 5-star recruit set a new school record with 57 points in an 80-54 win over Plano on Nov. 16.

Annabelle Davis, Azle girls wrestling

She went 3-0 with three pins at the Arlington Martin Invitational and in the process locked up her 100th career win.

Korey Davis, North Crowley boys basketball

The 6-foot-6 forward had a steal and then scored in the final seconds in a 54-53 win over South Grand Prairie on Saturday.

Rihanna DeLeon, Katy Tompkins girls basketball

The junior guard had 38 points and hit a school-record 10 3-point era in a win over Fort Bend Bush on Tuesday.

Talan Dodson, Comal Davenport volleyball

In the championship game, she helped the Wolves rally from a 2-0 deficit to win the Class 4 title 3-2 over Canyon Randall. Dodson had 29 kills and 17 digs.

Valerie Gonzalez, Southlake Carroll girls wrestling

The Dragons got a championship from Gonzalez at 107 pounds at the 14th Annual Heath Invitational on Saturday. She was 5-0 with 5 pins — all in 1:12 or quicker.

Lindsey Gooch, Iola volleyball

The MVP of the Class 2A finals was the senior who had 28 kills, 22 digs, and 1 assist in a win over Crawford.

DJ Hall, Plano East boys basketball

The junior power forward, who has an offer from Texas State, had 26 points in a 70-54 win over Dallas Highland Park on Monday.

Jazmine Hansley, Dickinson girls basketball

In a 67-51 win over Galveston Ball on Saturday, the junior had a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Haylee Lavalle, McKinney North girls wrestling

Competing at the 14th Annual Heath Invitational on Saturday, she took first place at 165 pounds with a 4-0 day, including three wins by fall.

Joel Lozano, Comfort boys basketball

The senior contributed 24 points to help the Bobcats win 52-20 over Knippa on Tuesday in the season opener.

Diego Martinez, San Elizario boys basketball

The senior center had a game-high 33 points to Eagles to a 58-56 win over Anthony on Monday.

Jake Matthews, Pollock Central boys basketball

He nearly recorded a triple-double in a 51-38 win over Wells on Tuesday. He finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 7 blocks.

Alex Orr, Texarkana Texas boys basketball

The Tigers went across the state line in Arkansas to beat Trinity Christian 83-60 on Tuesday and Orr had 26 points in the win.

Victor Reyna, San Antonio Johnson boys wrestling

Competing at the 21st Annual Cypress Ridge Classic on Saturday, he went 5-0 with three pins and two decisions to take first in the 120-pound bracket.

Ruby Rumohr, Blum volleyball

The MVP of the Class 1 finals set a new state record with assists with 45, breaking the previous mark of 41, held by two players. She added 21 digs and 4 kills for the champions.

Mackenzie Sims, Bushland volleyball

The junior had 10 kills, 15 digs, 30 assists, 4 aces, 2 blocks in the Class 3A championship against Gunter.

Dakari Spear, The Colony boys basketball

The four-star prospect scored a team-high 21 points — one of six in double figures — to help his squad pick up a 98-89 win over Frisco Emerson on Tuesday.

Halle Thompson, Conroe Grand Oaks volleyball

In an all-Houston-area final, the sophomore had 15 kills, 8 digs, 3 blocks and 3 assists in the UIL Class 5 championship game on Saturday.

Raegan Wheatley, Carrollton Newman Smith girls basketball

Days after hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat Plano John Paul II, Wheatley poured in a career-high 27 points in a 73-52 win against Dallas Bryan Adams on Tuesday.

Montana Wheeler, Houston Christian boys basketball

A junior with eight Division I offers, Wheeler scored 28 points as the No. 1-ranked team in TAPPS 6A/SPC 4A poll beat Stratford 84-69 on Tuesday.
