Byron Nelson stuns Southlake Carroll for historic Texas high school football win

Bobcats (8-0) clinch district title in 34-17 victory

The field was stormed as the final horn sounded in Trophy Club on Friday night.

Byron Nelson (Texas) stunned No. 9 Southlake Carroll in a 34-17 thrashing to remain undefeated on the season behind a massive performance on the ground from Tucker James and a turnover-happy defense.

James finished with 23 carries for 147 yards with a 40-plus yard touchdown run as the Bobcats clinched the District 4-6A, Region IV title.

It's the first time Byron Nelson (9-0, 6-0) has beaten the Dragons, a perennial Texas high school football power, since the school opened its doors in 2009

Southlake Carroll takes its first loss of 2023 after two consecutive weeks scoring 70-plus points.

Graham Knowles, a 3-star Georgia Tech commit, threw three interceptions in the loss, including a 27-yard pick-six by Jacoven Julian that put the Bobcats up 27-3 in the third quarter.

Knowles entered the season on a tear — with more than 1,600 passing yards and 14 touchdowns.

Byron Nelson held a 13-3 halftime lead and scored two unanswered touchdowns to open the third quarter.
