Rangers win Texas high school thriller on a scoring pass as time expires

FRISCO, TEXAS - After finally beating city rival Frisco Lone Star last season, Frisco Reedy wanted to do it again.

They seemed to be on the verge of doing that, but fell short on the very last play.

After the Lions scored two touchdowns in the final four minutes to go in front, 32-29, Lone Star got the final answer as quarterback Collin Blackstock found a wide-open Winston Pollard for a 42-yard TD pass as time expired, giving the Patriots a dramatic 35-32 win in the District 6-5A Division I opener for both teams at Toyota Stadium.

Pollard's catch capped a frenzied final few minutes of play.

Lone Star, which trailed 14-0 early and 17-9 at halftime, scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter to go in front. The Rangers then extended that lead to 12 points, 29-17, on a field goal with 7:37 left.

But the Lions (2-1, 0-1) didn't go away.

They stayed alive with a successful fourth-down conversion. Two plays later, junior tailback Triston Airy went in from a yard out, getting the Lions within five. The Lions then got a stop, receiving the ball right back after forcing a punt.

Reedy quickly marched down the field with two long pass plays, eventually reaching the Lone Star 7. Then, quarterback Braden Hernandez fired a pass to the end zone. Against two defenders, senior receiver Connor McGrath made a jumping grab to put Reedy back in the lead with 50 seconds left.

The Lions made it a three-point game on a two-point run from Kahlil Smith. But the Rangers (2-1, 1-0) still had plenty of time to pull off the miracle win.

The Rangers, who trailed 17-9 at halftime, got the second-half kickoff and reached the Reedy 20 before the drive stalled, but junior Chase Lanham came on to kick a 40-yard field goal, getting Lone Star within five, 17-12.

Then, after forcing Reedy to punt, the Rangers went 87 yards in 14 plays to grab their first lead on the night. Sophomore tailback Davian Groce scored his second TD, tiptoeing down the sideline to finish off a 37-yard scoring play.

The Rangers added two more points on a pass from quarterback Collin Blackstock to receiver Bryson Jones, making it 20-17 with 4:11 left in the third.

Reedy (2-1, 0-1), which broke a four-game losing streak to Lone Star with a 13-7 win last season for its first-ever win against the Rangers, then punted on its next series. It didn't take Lone Star long to strike again, as Blackstock found sophomore receiver Ryder Mix, who shook off a would-be tackler to go in from 36 yards out, extending the Rangers' lead to nine.

Lone Star added to its lead on another Lanham field goal - covering 43 yards - as the Rangers went from 14 down to up 12 with 7:37 left in the game. But they were unable to hold the lead; yet somehow, they got it back at the very end.

The Lions took the opening kickoff and marched 76 yards in 14 plays, capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jake Ferner to senior receiver Connor McGrath. Jackson Ruynan added the PAT for a 7-0 lead near the midway point of the first quarter.

Lone Star reached inside the Reedy 20 on its opening series but turned the ball over on downs. Two plays later, Airy took a pitch to the right before cutting back upfield and finding open space, going in from 66 yards out.

Ruynan's PAT made it 14-0, Lions, with 4:17 left in the first quarter.

The Rangers immediately responded on the very next offensive play, as Groce took a handoff and bolted 70 yards to eventually cut Reedy's lead in half.

Reedy went back up by double digits, 17-7, when Ruynan made a 42-yard field goal with 3:24 left in the first half. The drive stayed alive when Reedy offensive lineman Gavin Hebrle recovered a fumble.

Lone Star got a safety before halftime when senior linebacker Jaxon Lee - a Texas Tech commit - tackled Ferner in the end zone.
