Boyd fends off Wall to win first Texas (UIL) 3A state baseball championship

Yellowjacket rode strong start from Eric Rogers, leaned on defense to close

Boyd's bats put it way out ahead, but its defense came through to secure its first state championship in program history.

The Yellowjackets fended off Wall 6-4 to win the Texas (UIL) Class 3A state baseball championship at Dell Diamond on Saturday.

The Hawks got on the board in the second, tacked another run on in the fourth and piled four more on in the fifth to build a 6-0 lead fueled by a strong start from junior Eric Rogers.

Rogers struck out six with an earned run and three hits in a 5 2/3 inning start.

Wall had a run on second in scoring position and one out in the top of the seventh after freshman Kellan Oliver doubled down the left field line to drive two runs in and pull within two.

But Boyd fielded a hard ground ball at short stop and tagged Oliver out at third and the next batter grounded out at first to win.

For Boyd, it's the third state championship in school history. The other two came in football in 1983 and 2004.
