Coach of the Week

Congratulations to last week's winner: Corey Helms of Cardinal Newman.

Here are this week's nominees:

Marcus Surratt, Lancaster

There’s no way a 1-9 team can beat an eight-win team, right? Well, that’s what the Bruins did in a stunning 26-14 upset over Ridge View in the first round of the 4-A state playoffs.

Tom Knotts. Dutch Fork

Yes, an accountant might be needed to total up his state championships. But after an uncharacteristic 2-5 start, the Silver Foxes are humming. Their fourth win in a row was a 56-7 rout of Boiling Springs in the first round of the 5-A state playoffs. It looks like Dutch Fork is ready to defend its title.

Walt Wilson, Richland Northeast

What a night for the Cavaliers. They won a wild 88-54 shootout over Bluffton, setting a program record for points. Plus, it was Richland Northeast’s first playoff win since 2015.

Nick Pelham, White Knoll

The undefeated Timberwolves beat Cane Bay in the first round of the 5-A playoffs. Their 11th win broke the school record of 10 set in 2012.

Mickey Wilson, Myrtle Beach

After a down year, the Seahawks are back. Myrtle Beach scored a decisive win over May River in the first round of the 4-A state playoffs. That makes them 9-2 on the season. While the Seahawks did win a playoff game last year, they were just 5-7.

Bryce Lybrand, Beaufort

It has been an up and down season for the 3-A defending state champions. But they opened the playoffs in impressive fashion by rallying for a 30-13 win on the road at Loris, which is a tough place to play for a visiting team.

Jeff Calabrese, Hartsville

The Red Foxes roared out of the gate in the 4-A playoffs with an impressive 70-27 trouncing of A.C. Flora. Hartsville has won five in a row.

Dennie McDaniel, Stratford

Stratford was sitting at 2-5 after seven games. Now the Knights, who have won three of four, are in the second round of the 5-A state playoffs after beating Chapin 28-27 on a 46-yard field goal with six seconds left.

Adam Holmes, Gray Collegiate

The War Eagles had to go through a season when all their region foes forfeited. Holmes managed to add out-of-state games to fill the void. Now the playoffs are here, and the War Eagles are on the way after a 62-0 rout of Pelion in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs.

Reggie Shaw, James F. Byrnes

Dorman could have sprung an upset. But the Rebels were ready and rolled to a 44-17 win. Byrnes is 10-1 now and a contender for the 5-A title.
