Michael Hawkins, nation's No. 2 dual-threat quarterback, commits to Oklahoma Sooners

Frisco Emerson (Texas) four-star quarterback Michael Hawkins is the son of former Oklahoma cornerback Michael Hawkins Sr.

The quarterback class of 2024 is quickly drying up around the country.

By week's end, 16 of the nation's top 21 signal-callers are expected to have announced their verbal commitments.

Unsurprisingly, college football programs have been scrambling all spring to find "their guy."

On Saturday, it was the Oklahoma Sooners' turn, as Frisco Emerson (Texas) four-star quarterback Michael Hawkins chose Oklahoma over TCU, as well as early offers from Alabama, Michigan, Penn State and others.

Hawkins narrowed his list down to Oklahoma and TCU in-mid March after visiting both programs.

While the Sooners quietly emerged as the likely landing spot, the writing was on the way when TCU seemed to pivot to Aledo (Texas) quarterback Hauss Hejny, who flipped from Duke to the Horned Frogs on Thursday.

Hawkins is the son of Michael Hawkins Sr., who played cornerback for one season at Oklahoma before a multi-year NFL career.

As for the younger Hawkins, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound signal-caller has generated mixed reviews among recruiting services, although all agree he projects as a future FBS-caliber starting quarterback.

At his high point, Hawkins is rated the nation's No. 144 overall prospect and No. 2 dual-threat quarterback by Rivals, followed closely by ESPN, which ranks him as the nation's No. 238 overall prospect and No. 8 dual-threat quarterback.

On the flip side, both On3 and 247Sports view him as one of the nation's top-40 signal-callers and a three-star prospect.

Hawkins is the second pledge in Oklahoma's 2024 recruiting class, joining Casteel (Arizona) four-star cornerback Jeremiah Newcombe.
