The 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball season is well underway and SBLive is unveiling its second look at the 25 best teams in the state, spanning the UIL, TAPPS, SPC and the TCAL.

January was full of teams shifting attention away from a bevy of tournaments to district action.

1. Timberview (Mansfield, Tex.) (32-1, 14-0)

Previous rank: 1

The Wolves have won 29 in a row, the latest was a 63-26 win on Friday against Midlothian Heritage. Timberview closed on a 28-0 run to keep the streak alive for the No. 12-ranked team in the country in the SB Live poll. To make the win more impressive, the team was without Division I signee Kamryn Wilson, who was out with an injury. 

2. Clark (San Antonio, Tex.) (26-2, 12-1)

Previous rank: 2

Senior point guard Natalie Huff, a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi signee, recorded her 500th career assists in a 71-20 win over San Antonio Madison on Friday. The Cougars have won 4 in a row since a Jan. 10 loss to San Antonio Brandeis.

3. DeSoto (DeSoto, Tex.) (19-5, 9-1)

Previous rank: 3

The Lady Eagles have won 10 in a row since competing in Oregon. That winning streak includes a victory over previously No. 3-ranked Duncanville on Jan. 16. In that game, Kamora Pruitt had a team-high 15 for the DeSoto, which split the season-series with Duncanville. 

4. Duncanville (Duncanville, Tex.) (25-4, 10-1)

Previous rank: 3

The Pantherettes bounced back from a loss to DeSoto by winning three in a row since Jan. 16. Senior forward Mariah Clayton’s 12.7 points per game leads a balanced attack for Duncanville. 

5. South Grand Prairie (Grand Prairie, Tex.) (22-3, 10-0)

Previously: 5

Two of the three losses this year for the Warriors have come against No. 1 Mansfield Timberview. SGP has won 7 in a row and in the most recent game put up a football-score-like 79-7 win over Arlington Sam Houston. Texas A&M pledge Taliyah Parker had 15 in the win. 

6. Liberty (Frisco, Tex.) (24-7, 11-0)

Previously: 6

The Redhawks are a perfect 11-0 in district play and are on an 8-game winning streak. Since a 4-game skid in November, Liberty has won 17 of the past 18 games. Keyera Roseby scored her 1,000th point on Jan. 16. 

7. Summer Creek (Humble, Tex.) (27-3, 10-1)

Previously: 7

The Lady Bulldogs avenged one of their three losses on Jan. 16 with a 47-41 win over Beaumont West Brook. Rutgers signee Zachara Perkins recently was honored for scoring her 2,000th career point. 

8. Lewisville Hebron (Carrollton, Tex.) (28-5, 11-0)

Previously: 8

Paris Bradley became the Hawks’ all-time leading scorer at 1,564 points on Jan. 26. Hebron is currently on a 10-game winning streak heading into the final week of January. 

9. Fort Bend Austin (Sugar Land, Tex.) (28-1, 13-0)

Previously: 10

The Lady Bulldogs have won 24 in a row and the last loss was on Nov. 11. Shun’teria Anumele is leading the offensive attack, scoring 25.8 points per game. 

10. Glenn (Leander, Tex.) (28-2, 10-1)

Previously: 13

The Grizzlies knocked off previously No. 11-ranked Liberty Hill on Jan. 12. Glenn is 7-1 since the calendar flipped over to the new year. 

11. Liberty Hill (Liberty Hill, Tex.) (31-1, 10-1)

Previously: 11

The Lady Panthers’ hot start and undefeated streak came to an end against Leander Glenn, 44-30, on Jan. 12. Since then, they have won four in a row, including an emphatic 67-12 win against Kyle Lehman on Jan. 26.

12. Amarillo (Amarillo, Tex.) (30-4, 6-0)

Previously: 12

The Lady Sandies are on a 10-game winning surge and have scored 70 or more 5 times during that stretch. Amarillo survived, 50-48, against Amarillo Tascosa on Jan. 16. West Texas A&M signee Taytum Bell hit the final basket in the win. 

13. Springs (Cypress, Tex.) (24-2, 11-0)

Previously: 15

Three different players are scoring 10 or more points per game for the Lady Panthers. Ayla McDowell, a junior, has a 19.9 points per-game average. She’s had 5 games of 20 or more in 2024.

14. Glen Rose (Glen Rose, Tex.) (26-3, 5-0)

Previously: 16

The Lady Tigers are ranked No. 1 in 4A in the TABC poll and have a stingy defense — giving up an average of 30 points per game. Glen Rose is 19-1 in its last 20 and the only loss is to No. 1-ranked Mansfield Timberview.

15. Argyle (Argyle, Tex.) (28-4, 10-1)

Previously: 14

The Lady Eagles had a 17-game winning streak end at the hands of district rival Colleyville Heritage on Jan. 23. Argyle responded with a 67-20 win over Birdville on Friday, where Samantha Bacon had 21. 

16. Monterey (Lubbock, Tex.) (27-5, 10-0)

Previously: 20

Aaliyah Chavez has went over the 3,000-point mark in her career — rarified air in high school sports. Monterey is in the midst of a 20-game winning streak and are No. 8 in the Class 5A poll.

17. L.D. Bell (Hurst, Tex.) (28-2, 10-1)

Previously: 17

The Blue Raiders saw a 17-game winning streak end with a loss to Crowley on Jan. 26. Both of the losses this year by Bell have been by six points each game.

18. Boswell (Fort Worth, Tex.) (28-5, 8-3)

Previously: 9

The Lady Pioneers have struggled as late, dropping 3 of its past 7, including to Crowley, North Crowley and Hurst L.D. Bell

19. La Vega (Waco, Texas) (25-8, 7-0)

Previously: NR

The Lady Pirates have 7 losses to teams ranked above them in this poll, including twice to Duncanville. Lately, La Vega has been putting up points in bunches — 111, 83 and 105 in the last three. In a 105-36 win over Robinson on Friday, Mar’Cyah Willis scored 29.

20. Sunnyvale (Sunnyvale, Tex.) 28-2, 10-0)

Previously: 23

The Lady Raiders are 10-0 in district play after a 52-23 win over Kauffman on Friday, which locked up the district championship. Kerbie Cash had a double-double win the win with 29 points and 17 rebounds. 

21. Fredericksburg (Fredericksburg, Tex.) (25-4, 9-0)

Previously: Not ranked

The Lady Battlin’ Billies debut on this list after an upset win over former-No. 18-ranked Boerne, 33-28, on Jan. 12. After a 5-3 start, the team has gotten hot and is now No. 4 in the TABC Class 4 poll. Junior Kirsten Hartmann joined the 1,000-point club on Jan. 16. 

22. Levelland (Levelland, Tex.) (22-2, 0-0)

Previously: 22

Ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, the Loboettes have won all 7 games in 2024, including rallying to beat Lubbock Estacado, 49-39, on Jan. 16, behind 15 points from Olivia Velardez. On Jan. 23, Levelland leveled Big Spring, 93-4. 

23. Brennan (San Antonio, Tex.) (24-3, 13-0)

Previously: 24

Ranked No. 9 in 6A, the Bears have won 13 in a row. In a 74-41 win over Helotes O’Connor, Taylor Ross had 22 points and 22 rebounds. She also eclipsed the 1,000 career rebound mark. 

24. Seminole (Seminole, Tex.) (26-4, 7-0)

Previously: Not ranked

The Lady Indians are up to No. 5 in the Class 4A poll and have won 7 in a row since losing to No. 23 Sunnyvale. During the winning streak, Seminole has scored 87, 90, 90, 97, 91, 98, 105 and 100 points. 

25. Antonian Prep (San Antonio, Tex.) (27-7, 7-0)

Previously: 25

The Lady Apahces are still ranked No. 1 in the TAPPS 6A/SPC 4A rankings. The Foxes — Kyzarriah and Shaniyah — are leading the offense by combining nearly 30 points per game.
