It was a three-horse race for the top spot in the national high school boys basketball preseason rankings, and one team ever-so-slightly edged out the others.

Montverde Academy (Florida) sits atop this season’s opening edition of the SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25, marking the third year in a row the Eagles have begun the season ranked No. 1 in the country.

The preseason rankings were published Oct. 23 and will be updated once seasons are in full swing.

With do-it-all sensation Cooper Flagg as the headliner, Montverde boasts an immensely talented roster that has a ton of experience together.

Prolific Prep (California) and defending national champion Link Academy (Missouri) round out the top three to start the 2023-24 season.

Including No. 1 Montverde Academy, eight of the top 25 teams come from the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC), the loaded super-league with teams from around the country.

Other leagues with strong representation in the preseason Power 25 include California’s CIF-Southern Section and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), which both have multiple nationally-ranked squads.

With only 11 teams that finished last season in the top 25 also starting out this year ranked, there are plenty of new faces making their way into the national conversation.
