The Class 6A Oregon high school girls basketball playoffs continued Saturday with Round 2 action around the state. Here's a game-by-game summary of the action.

South Medford 56, Sherwood 45 

The top-seeded Panthers finished strong and overcame a determined Bowmen squad to get the win at South Medford High School.

South Medford faced a 40-39 deficit going to the fourth quarter but outscored Sherwood 17-5 in the final period.

Junior Sara Schmerbach led a balanced South Medford scoring attack with 15 points. She had seven rebounds, four assists and six steals.

Senior Kim Ceron-Romero added 14 points. Sophomore Taylor Young had 12 points, four assists and two steals. Sophomore Mayen Akpan added seven points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Dyllyn Howell had five points and five rebounds.

For Sherwood, senior Ava Heiden scored a game-high 18 points. She was 5 for 5 from the field and made 8 of her 10 free throw attempts. She had nine rebounds.

Senior Sabrina Flowers added 11 points for the Bowmen. Senior Paige Bittner had six points and four rebounds, and junior Kylie Yamanaka chipped in with six points.

South Medford, the Southwest Conference champion, improved to 23-3. The Panthers will face Southridge in a state tournament quarterfinal Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

Sherwood, which shared the Pacific Conference championship, finished its season 16-10.

Southridge 60, West Linn 55

The Skyhawks jumped out to a big halftime lead and fought off a late rally by the Lions to get the win at Southridge High School.

Southridge sprinted to a 30-13 lead late in the second quarter on its way to posting a 32-17 halftime advantage. Sophomore guard Reese Jordan kept West Linn alive, scoring 13 of the Lions’ 17 first-half points.

The Skyhawks claimed a 44-28 lead at the end of the third quarter. West Linn trimmed the deficit to 58-51 with 1 minute and 21 seconds remaining, but Southridge fought off the Lions to get the win.

Sophomore Sara Mangan had her second consecutive big playoff performance for the Skyhawks, this time posting a game-high 31 points. Senior Avery Barron added some key rebounds and hustle plays.

Southridge, which shared the Metro League crown with Beaverton and Jesuit, moved to 22-4. The Skyhawks will face top-seeded South Medford in a state tournament quarterfinal at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

West Linn, the Three Rivers League runner-up, finished its season 18-8.

Willamette 50, Oregon City 32

The Wolverines took control early and stayed in charge the rest of the way in triumphing at Willamette High School.

With junior wing Maddy Warberg sinking two 3-point baskets, Willamette claimed a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Oregon City trimmed the margin to 10, at 26-16, at halftime.

The Pioneers got even closer, cutting the margin to five early in the third quarter, but Willamette cut that rally short, thanks to its defense, which held Oregon City scoreless for an 8-minute stretch covering the last four minutes of the third quarter and the first four minutes of the fourth. That allowed the Wolverines to pull away.

Junior guard Brynn Smith tallied a game-high 21 points, including 10 in the first quarter, to lead the Wolverines. Walberg scored 10 points, and junior guard Victoria Nguyen sank three second-half 3-point baskets.

For Oregon City, senior Mollie Miller scored nine points, senior Kaitlen Carns added seven points, and senior Megan Craig had six.

Willamette, the Southwest Conference runner-up, improved to 20-7. The Wolverines will face Jefferson in a state tournament quarterfinal at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

Oregon City, the No. 3 squad out of the Three Rivers League, finished its season 17-9.

Jefferson 67, Forest Grove 37

The Democrats ended the first quarter on a 14-0 run, claiming a 19-5 lead, and never looked back at Jefferson High School.

Junior Abrianna Lawrence had 13 points, seven rebounds and six steals for the Democrats. Junior Charisma Johnson added 12 points, four rebounds and four steals, and junior Carmela Nunez had 12 points and five rebounds.

For Forest Grove, junior guard Matea Vernon scored eight points. Sophomore wing Cali Davis and senior guard Emma Emerson each had seven points.

Jefferson, which shared the Portland Interscholastic League title with Benson, moved to 24-2. The Democrats will face Willamette in a state tournament quarterfinal at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

Forest Grove, the No. 3 team out of the Pacific Conference, finished its season 20-6.

Grants Pass 54, McMinnville 45

The Cavers, behind a strong defensive effort, came away with a road win over the third-seeded Grizzlies at McMinnville High School.

Grants Pass limited McMinnville, which entered averaging 62.5 points per game, to seven points in the first quarter and 16 in the first half. The Cavers led 20-16 at the break.

Senior guard Brooke Anderson led the way for Grants Pass with 15 points. She had six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Senior forward Brooklyn Wakefield added 14 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in addition to taking a charge. Junior forward Callie Brands had 11 points, going 5 for 5 from the free throw line, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals.

For McMinnville, junior Macie Arzner scored a game-high 23 points. Sophomore Brooklynn Summers and junior Rylie McManus each added eight points.

Grants Pass, the No. 3 team out of the Southwest Conference, moved to 18-9. The Cavers will face Benson in a state tournament quarterfinal Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

McMinnville, a Pacific Conference co-champion, ended its season 22-4.

Benson 62, Nelson 34 

Benson notched its 15th victory in a row, rolling to the win at the Marshall Campus.

The Techsters pulled away near the end of the first half, finishing the second quarter on a 7-0 run that gave the home team a 36-22 advantage.

Senior forward Mahogany Chandler-Roberts led the way with 17 points, getting 13 of those in the second half. Senior guard Eboni Clay sank four 3-pointers and added 15 points. Senior Mauriana Hashemian-Orr scored 13 points.

Nelson, playing without standout freshman Love Forde, who missed the game because of injury, was led by senior Ella Shackleton’s nine points. Sophomore wing Lainey Day added eight.

Benson, which shared the Portland Interscholastic League title with Jefferson, improved to 21-4. The Techsters will next be in action Thursday, when they face Grants Pass in a state tournament quarterfinal at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

Nelson, the Mt. Hood Conference runner-up, finished its season 22-4.

Jesuit 39, Tualatin 31

The Crusaders triumphed in a defensive battle at Tualatin High School.

Jesuit picked up some momentum right before halftime when junior guard Audrey Bayless sank a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the second quarter, giving the Crusaders a 17-14 advantage.

Senior post Kendra Hicks took over inside in the second half for Jesuit, helping the visitors power their way to victory.

Hicks finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Bayless had 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Sophia Costarella had four points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Senior Taniyah Smith had three rebounds.

For Tualatin, senior Jaylyn Arosemena had a team-high 10 points. Junior Jordyn Smith added nine points, and sophomore Alex Padilla had seven.

Jesuit, which shared the Metro League championship with Beaverton and Southridge, improved to 20-6. The Crusaders will face defending state champion Clackamas in a state tournament quarterfinal Thursday at 8:15 p.m. at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

Tualatin, the Three Rivers League champion, ended its season 20-5.

Clackamas 75, West Salem 50 

The defending state champion Cavaliers got off to a fast start, overcame some adversity and finished with a flurry at Clackamas High School.

Clackamas, behind its pressure defense, jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the game was even a minute old, with junior guard Avery Peterson having two steals that led to layups in that early barrage.

Behind the play of junior guard Sara Barhoum, who scored 10 first-quarter points, the Cavaliers pushed their lead to 23-8. With 1 minute and 45 seconds left in the opening period, Clackamas standout junior Jazzy Davidson picked up her third foul, and she didn’t play for the rest of the half. 

West Salem, behind the play of sophomore Emma Zuniga, trimmed the deficit to 35-26 at halftime, but the Titans would not get closer. 

Clackamas outscored West Salem 40-24 in the second half, with Davidson scoring 13 fourth-quarter points.

Barhoum had a big performance for Clackamas with 28 points, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Davidson added 22 points, including 17 in the second half. Junior Allie Roden scored 18 points. Peterson finished with two points, four steals, seven assists and two blocks.

For the young West Salem team, which has no seniors and one junior on the varsity roster, Zuniga scored 28 points. Sophomore Chica Casas added six points. Freshman Karlee Martirano and junior Johanna Diaz each scored five.

Clackamas, the Mt. Hood Conference champion, moved to 22-3. The Cavaliers will face Jesuit in a state tournament quarterfinal at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

West Salem, the Central Valley Conference champion, finished its season 17-9.
