After 32 years, Tualatin has a state champion — Logan Sunnell: Oregon wrestling 190/170 big-school roundup

“I knew from the beginning I was going to win a state championship”

Logan Sunnell wasn’t about to let a little thing like a torn meniscus derail his dream of becoming the first wrestling state champion in Tualatin’s 32-year history.

The injury at the Larry Owings Invitational led to the only two losses on his record — he forfeited the semifinal and third-place matches — but upon his return to the mat a month later, the Timberwolves junior would not be stopped.

He pinned 10 of his final 12 opponents, although his victory over Aloha’s Richard Gomez in Saturday night’s Class 6A 190-pound final at the OSAA state championships at Portland’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum went the full six minutes.

When the final whistle blew on his 12-5 decision, he let out a yell that reverberated around that end of the Coliseum floor.

“I know my limits, and that wasn’t my limit,” Sunnell said of the injury. “I was ready to go out there and wrestle. I knew from the beginning I was going to win a state championship. It’s pretty amazing to be the first state champion from Tualatin.”

5A: Becoming the first member of his family to win a state title wasn’t enough for Hillsboro senior Preston Echeverria.

No, he had to return to the Coliseum for this year’s tournament and do it all over again.

“I had to come back and take what’s mine, take my title,” Echeverria said after completing his romp through the bracket with a second-period pin of Redmond’s Orrin Hubbard. “I got it last year. I knew I was going to get it this year.”

Echeverria pinned his way to his second title, with none of his four matches reaching the third round.

6A/5A Girls: Cleveland junior Isabel Herring ended Wilsonville senior Jasmine Brown’s bid to win a second consecutive state title by pinning her at the end of the second period of their 170-pound final.
