6A Oregon boys basketball Round 1: West Linn wins at Jefferson; Sandy stuns Sherwood; Tualatin eyes 3rd straight title
The Class 6A Oregon high school boys basketball playoffs tipped off Tuesday with Round 1 action around the state. Here's a game-by-game summary of the action.

Central Catholic 84, North Medford 56
The top-seeded Rams took care of business in a big way, jumping out to a 40-20 halftime lead and cruising to victory at Central Catholic High School.
Senior Marley Zeller led the way for Central Catholic with 27 points. Sophomore Zamir Paschal tallied 15 points, junior Duce Paschal scored 11, and sophomore Jalen Nicholson added 10.
With the win, its 17th in a row, Central Catholic, the Mt. Hood Conference champion, moved to 23-3. The Rams will play host to Mountainside in a second-round tilt Friday.
North Medford, which shared the No. 4 spot out of the Southwest Conference, ended its season 11-15.
Mountainside 55, Sprague 52
The Mavericks came away with the victory in a back-and-forth thriller at Sprague High School.
Sophomore guard J’Kobi Nicholson stepped up and sank the go-ahead 3-pointer for Mountainside with 13 seconds left. Junior Brayden Boe tallied a game-high 27 points for the Mavericks.
Junior Braxton Long led the Olympians with 16 points. Junior Jarod Stanley added 15.
With the victory, Mountainside, which tied for third place in the Metro League, moved to 14-11. The Mavericks will play at top-seeded Central Catholic in a second-round contest Friday.
Sprague, the Central Valley Conference champion, ended its season 16-9.
South Medford 81, Cleveland 46
The Panthers, after losing at home in the first round last year, made sure history didn’t repeat itself, rolling to a big win at South Medford High School.
Senior guard Jackson Weiland led the way for South Medford with 28 points, six rebounds and five assists. Senior Ty Dahlin had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds to go with four blocks. Sophomore Jed Johnson added 13 points, and junior Cole Adee had 11 points and three assists.
South Medford, the Southwest Conference champion, improved to 19-6. The Panthers will play at Jesuit in a second-round game Friday.
Cleveland, the No. 3 team out of the Portland Interscholastic League, finished its season 14-12.
Jesuit 73, South Eugene 50
The Crusaders got off to a fast start, grabbing a 22-8 lead after one quarter, and never looked back at Jesuit High School.
Junior guard Pat Kilfoil led the way for Jesuit with 22 points. Senior post Andrew Washtok added 14 points, and senior wing Nico Rafalovich had 10.
Senior Trey Saunders paced the Axe with 20 points, and junior Levi Hawes added 15.
Jesuit, the No. 2 team out of the Metro League, moved to 17-8. The Crusaders will play host to South Medford in a second-round contest Friday.
South Eugene, which tied for the runner-up spot out of the Southwest Conference, finished its season 13-13.
Tualatin 91, Sunset 64
The two-time defending state champion Timberwolves opened their postseason quest for a third consecutive state crown in impressive fashion, getting the big win at Tualatin High School.
Senior wing Jaden Steppe paced Tualatin with 26 points, including 20 in the first half. Sophomore guard Jemai Lake added 20 points.
For Sunset, Jett Birdsall and Kayin Turner each had 17 points. Turner went over 1,000 points for his high school career.
With the victory, its eighth in a row, Tualatin, the Three Rivers League champion, improved to 19-6. The Timberwolves will play host to West Salem in a second-round contest Friday.
Sunset, the No. 6 team out of the Metro League, finished its season 10-15.
West Salem 91, Nelson 74
The Titans emerged victorious in an up-tempo, up-and-down contest at West Salem High School.
Senior Matthew Luke sank eight 3-point baskets on his way to posting 27 points for West Salem. Senior Connor Oertel added 16 points. Senior Jackson Leach scored 13, sophomore DaMari Hall scored 12, and junior Kaden Martirano had 10.
For Nelson, freshman guard Braylon Gaines scored a game-high 29 points. Senior Sam Lewis added 22.
West Salem, the No. 2 squad out of the Central Valley Conference, improved to 20-5. The Titans will play at two-time defending state champion Tualatin in a second-round game Friday.
Nelson, the No. 5 team out of the Mt. Hood Conference, finished its season 14-11.
Sandy 46, Sherwood 44
The Pioneers came away with a thrilling victory at Sherwood High School.
Sandy got the victory on a short-range basket by senior Carson Reilley with 2 seconds left, coming off a heads-up assist from senior Marcos Ramirez.
With the win, Sandy, the No. 4 team out of the Mt. Hood Conference, moved to 17-8. The Pioneers will play at conference foe Barlow in a second-round contest Friday.
Sherwood, the Pacific Conference runner-up, finished its season 17-9.
Barlow 66, Century 41
The Bruins turned a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter to a 34-19 halftime advantage on their way to triumphing at Barlow High School.
Junior Brayden Barron had a double-double for Barlow with a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Jalen Atkins scored 13 points, junior Mason Bierbrauer added 11, and senior Cole Patrick had six points and nine assists.
Junior Islam Muzaffarov and senior Jordan Johnson each tallied 11 points for the Jaguars.
Barlow, the No. 2 team out of the Mt. Hood Conference, improved to 18-7. The Bruins will play host to conference rival Sandy in a second-round game Friday.
Century, the No. 3 team from the Pacific Conference, finished its season 14-12.
Roosevelt 96, David Douglas 59
The Roughriders got rolling in a big way to get the impressive victory at Roosevelt High School.
Senior guard Terrence Hill Jr. shined with 28 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Senior guard Utrillo Morris had 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals, and junior guard Owen Nathan added 18 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Roosevelt, the Portland Interscholastic League champion, moved to 23-2. The Roughriders will play host to Gresham in a second-round game Friday.
David Douglas, the No. 6 team out of the Mt. Hood Conference, finished its season 13-12.
Gresham 75, Lincoln 72
The Gophers rallied from a 36-32 halftime deficit to get the hard-fought win at Gresham High School.
Senior Nathaniel Gilkey led four Gophers in double figures with 16 points. Senior Jamierre Phillips scored 12 points, sophomore Kareem Artharee had 11, and senior RJ Alexander added 10.
Lincoln got a game-high 31 points from Evan Heisler. Senior Tanner Overby added 23 for the Cardinals.
Gresham, the No. 3 squad out of the Mt. Hood Conference, improved to 17-8. The Gophers will play at Roosevelt in a second-round tilt Friday.
Lincoln, the No. 4 team out of the Portland Interscholastic League, finished its season 14-12.
Grant 77, Roseburg 57
The Generals took control from the start, jumping out to a 37-17 lead on their way to getting the big win at Grant High School.
Junior guard/wing Mekhi Muhammad tallied 21 points, including 10 in the third quarter, to pace Grant. Senior Vashon Hardges added 11 points, and junior Quincy Scott scored 10.
For Roseburg, senior Jullian Lopez scored 15 points, senior Mykah Mendoza had 14, and junior Owen Bentea added 11.
Grant, the No. 2 team out of the Portland Interscholastic League, moved to 18-7. The Generals will travel to Liberty for a second-round game Friday.
Roseburg, which tied for the No. 4 spot out of the Southwest Conference, ended its season 14-11.
Liberty 67, Lakeridge 63
The Falcons were able to rally and then fight off the Pacers to get a well-earned victory at Liberty High School.
Liberty, which trailed 31-28 at halftime and was down 48-42 at the end of the third quarter, battled back to take a 60-54 lead with less than two minutes to play.
Senior forward Tyler Bradford scored 24 points to help lead the Falcons to victory.
Senior Luke Womack scored 20 points for Lakeridge. Senior Nick Ghetie added 16.
Liberty, the Pacific Conference champion, moved to 21-4. The Falcons will play host to Grant in a second-round contest Friday.
Lakeridge, the No. 4 team out of the Three Rivers League, ended its season 14-10.
Beaverton 72, Grants Pass 53
The Beavers started fast, jumping out to a 24-9 lead with 1 minute and 50 seconds left in the first quarter, and never trailed on their way to getting the victory at Beaverton High School.
Senior Aidan Rice led the way for Beaverton with 24 points, getting 15 of those in the big opening period. Senior Chance Winter added 21 points, two on a thunderous dunk off an alley-oop pass from senior Max Campbell, who finished with 15 points.
Senior Luke Morgan led the Cavemen with 12 points. Junior Zachary DeChenne added 10.
Beaverton, the No. 3 team out of the Metro League, moved to 16-9. The Beavers will play host to Metro League rival Westview in a second-round game Friday.
Grants Pass, the Southwest Conference runner-up, finished its season 13-12.
Westview 42, Oregon City 40
The Wildcats, with a strong second-half performance, came away with the road victory at Oregon City High School.
Junior guard Kai Russell led the way for Westview with a game-high 20 points. Junior wing Gylan Payne paced the Pioneers with 15 points.
Westview, the No. 4 squad out of the Metro League, improved to 15-10. The Wildcats will play at league rival Beaverton in a second-round game Friday.
Oregon City, which tied for the No. 2 spot out of the Three Rivers League, ended its season 15-8.
West Linn 74, Jefferson 62
The Lions, last year’s state tournament runner-up, came away with a big road victory to start postseason play, getting the win at Jefferson High School.
Senior guard Nick DiGiulio sank six 3-pointers on his way to scoring a game-high 24 points for West Linn. Junior Gavin Gross added 16 points. Freshman Pat Viavla scored 15, and senior Max Juhala had 10.
Sophomore Adrian Montague led Jefferson with 21 points. Seniors TJ Latu and Charles Manigo each scored 16.
West Linn, which tied for the runner-up spot out of the Three Rivers League, moved to 15-11. The Lions will travel to Southridge for a second-round game Friday.
Jefferson, the No. 5 team out of the Portland Interscholastic League, finished its season 15-10.
Southridge 72, McNary 34
The second-seeded Skyhawks got their postseason trek off to a soaring start, cruising to victory at Southridge High School.
Junior guard Keenan Reckamp led a balanced Southridge scoring attack with 15 points. Senior Kaden Groenig and junior Alonzo Hoff each scored 13 points. Senior Carter Fortune had 11 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. Senior Dante Scott added 10 points.
Southridge, the Metro League champion, moved to 23-3 with the win, its sixth in a row. The Skyhawks will play host to West Linn in a second-round game Friday.
McNary, the No. 3 squad out of the Central Valley Conference, finished its season 14-11.
