Oregon high school volleyball playoffs: Highlights from Day 2; vote for Saturday's top star

The Oregon high school volleyball playoffs continued Saturday. Here are some of the highlights and top performers from the second day of matches.

CLASS 6A

Westview 3, Sheldon 2 

In a rematch from last year’s semifinals, the Wildcats (21-8) dug out of an 0-2 hole and ousted the defending champion Irish 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 15-13 in Eugene.

Westview will play Nelson in Friday’s quarterfinals at Forest Grove High School.

Nelson 3, West Salem 1 

Madi Andrews hit .362 with 21 kills, eight digs and five aces, and Amelia Eubanks had 42 assists and eight digs as the host Hawks (26-5) rallied after dropping the second set to defeat West Salem 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20. Gabby Hill had 20 kills (hitting .341), seven aces, seven digs and two blocks, and Lainey Day added nine kills and three blocks. 

South Salem 3, Central Catholic 1 

The Saxons (21-8) avenged a 2021 quarterfinal loss to the Rams and earned their first trip to the state tournament since 2017 with a 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26 home win. Briella Mathis led the way with 16 kills and 21 digs, Malena Mathis added 12 kills, and Kamree Orizotti had 46 assists.

They’ll face top-seeded Jesuit (28-2), which swept Grant 25-19, 25-18, 25-8 to reach the tournament for the 25th consecutive season. 

Oregon City 3, Forest Grove 0 

The Pioneers (21-3) are making their second consecutive trip to the final eight after a 26-24, 25-12, 25-20 home win over the Vikings, who were bidding for their first trip since 2000 after earning the first postseason win in program history Wednesday.

“After a slow start, we found our rhythm on offense,” said Oregon City coach Erica Frafjord, who credited middle hitters Brooke Williams and Olivia Adamo and right-side hitter Grace Landon with strong performances. 

Sherwood 3, Barlow 1 

Emily Fulton had 18 kills and nine digs, and Lila Wagner had a strong serving game in the first set and finished with 16 digs as the Bowmen (18-4) advanced to the 6A tournament for the first time in program history with a 25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19 home win. Campbell O’Connell added 16 kills, 11 digs and three aces for Sherwood, which hadn’t qualified for a state tournament since 2011.

Sunset 3, St. Mary’s Academy 1

Middle blockers Avery Horne and Elle Gutierrez combined for 17 blocks and five kills, Sara Davies had a match-high 15 kills, and Leila Yazd had 17 assists and was 14 for 15 serving with an ace as the Apollos (26-4) are back in the final eight for the first time since 2019 with a 25-16, 25-19, 14-25, 25-22 home win. 

“Our two middles did a wonderful job,” Sunset coach Lad Salness said. “They were a big reason we won.” 

Sprague 3, Roseburg 1 

The Olympians (27-4) return to the quarterfinals for the fifth time in the past six seasons as Brooke Friesen hit .324 with 13 kills, 15 assists, 15 digs and four blocks in a 25-17, 25-14, 21-15, 25-14 home win. Sidney Friesen added eight kills and 15 digs, Faith Buchheit had seven kills, and Evie Morrissette handed out 17 assists with nine digs and two aces. 

CLASS 5A

Crescent Valley 3, Putnam 0 

The Raiders (19-2) continued their defense of the state championship with a dominant performance, beating the visiting Kingsmen 25-5, 25-9, 25-9 in Corvallis. Bella Jacobsen had a team-high 13 kills and five aces, Taelyn Bentley added eight kills and five aces, and Kam Mitchell had 28 assists and seven kills as Crescent Valley hit .532 as a team. Dani Street chipped in 14 digs and five aces. 

“The team did a great job of coming out strong and establishing their game,” said Raiders coach Troy Shorey. “The players are really playing at a high level and looking forward to Friday and retaining their state title.” 

Summit 3, Churchill 1

Nyah Mitchell had 21 kills for the Lancers, but they struggled with serve receive in the third and fourth sets after splitting the first two and lost at home 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-12 to the Storm (11-9). 

Thurston 3, Ridgeview 0

The Colts (19-5) pulled away after a taut first set to sweep the 2019 state champions in Springfield, 26-24, 25-11, 25-18. Scout Matin led Thurston with nine kills and 18 digs, while Julia Cook had six kills, 10 digs and six aces, and Emily Buller added 21 assists and 10 digs.

The Colts will take on South Albany (18-4), which swept La Salle Prep 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 to advance for the second consecutive season.

Crater 3, Centennial 0 

The Comets (21-8) are returning to Forest Grove after a 25-17, 25-12, 25-19 home win led by Lanie Snow’s 10 kills and five blocks. Taylee Wilson directed a balanced attack with 28 assists, while Callie Aplin added nine kills and seven blocks, Alexa Gugliotta had five kills and five blocks, and Joslyhn Pope had 11 digs.

Crater will meet Wilsonville in Friday’s quarterfinals in Forest Grove in a rematch of last year’s third-place match, which the Wildcats won in three sets. 

Wilsonville 3, Mountain View 0 

The Wildcats (18-6) will make their fifth consecutive trip to the final site following a 26-24, 25-23, 25-20 home win over the Cougars, who were bidding for their first trip since 2011.

“It was a tough match,” said Wilsonville coach Scott Thompson. “Mountain View is a good team, well-coached and from a great conference. Our team persevered and came back in each of the first two sets, playing great down the stretch and finishing sets well.” 

Bend 3, Silverton 0

Chloe LeLuge had 17 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and two aces for the Lava Bears (14-3) in a 25-19, 25-21, 25-9 home win that ended the career of Foxes setter Alexis Haury, a two-time Gatorade state player of the year. Lucy Schuller added eight kills, three aces, three blocks and 15 assists, and Lacy Clothier had 16 assists and nine digs for Bend, which reached the state final last fall. 

West Albany 3, Eagle Point 0 

Kendyl Arnett had 21 kills (.500 hitting), 12 digs and four aces, and Mylee Blake added 12 kills and 19 digs as the Bulldogs (19-6) booked their fifth consecutive trip to the state tournament with a 25-17, 25-21, 26-24 home win. Setters Ellie Grace and Ashley Hemmer combined for 43 assists and nine digs, and Grace served three aces.

CLASS 4A

Marshfield 3, La Grande 0

Tatum Montiel had 12 kills and three aces, and Ava Ainsworth had 29 assists, six kills and three aces as the Pirates (25-3) continued their title defense with a 25-14, 25-11, 25-19 home win. 

“A well-rounded team effort tonight,” said Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel, who also saw Alie Clarke record six kills, four aces and two blocks. “We’re excited about the opportunity to return to the state tournament.” 

Marshfield will open the tournament Friday at Springfield High School against No. 9 seed The Dalles (14-8), which won at Pendleton 25-21, 25-22, 25-15. 

Aubrey Bisenius led the Tigers with five kills and five assists, Dylann Justice had seven assists and two aces, and Rylan Mellinger added three kills and two aces. 

Cascade 3, Estacada 0 

Senior libero Jadyn Daviscourt celebrated her 18th birthday with 15 digs and two aces, and Annabelle Peterson had 12 kills, four blocks and two aces to lead the Cougars (19-3) to a 25-15, 25-23, 25-13 home win.

Sophomore setter Irene Rocha-Ibarra had 36 assists, and Bella Oliver had six aces and five kills for Cascade, which won the 2021 title and reached the final last year. The Cougars will play North Bend (17-6), a 25-22, 25-23, 25-13 winner over Astoria, in Friday’s quarterfinals. 

Mazama 3, Stayton 0

Mazama (16-6) had never qualified for the state tournament before last year, but the Vikings are making back-to-back appearances after a 25-14, 25-18, 25-16 home win. They’ll face Tillamook (18-3), which beat Cottage Grove 25-20, 24-26, 25-14, 25-13, in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Alexia Lowe had 20 assists and 13 digs, feeding sister Isabella Lowe (10 kills, eight digs) and Gillian Merhoff (nine kills, 10 digs, three aces). Abbygayle Beals had five blocks and four kills. 

Crook County 3, Philomath 0 

Lillimae Brumble and Paige Wood had nine kills apiece, and libero Jaycee Villastrigo added 25 digs and six aces as the Cowgirls (19-9) won 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 at home to clinch their 19th trip to a state tournament in the past 20 seasons. Joann McKinnon had 16 assists and three aces, and Cylie Hartzell had eight kills.

Marist Catholic 3, Klamath Union 0

Giana Elgarico had 14 kills, 12 digs and three aces, and Avia Tuguldur added seven kills, 10 digs and two aces to lift the Spartans (20-2) to a 25-14, 25-13, 25-15 home win and their first quarterfinal berth since 2016. Setter Lauren Rodman dished out 30 assists to go with seven digs, five aces and three kills, and Avy Roundy had five kills and two blocks.

Jacie Madden, Keely Hall and Lilly Huck each had six kills for the Pelicans, making their first playoff appearance since 1999. Brooklyn Morrow added 17 digs. 

CLASS 3A

Sisters 3, Vale 0 

The top-seeded Outlaws (22-2) got 21 kills, 14 digs and four aces from Saint Mary’s College commit Gracie Vohs and 11 kills, 11 digs and five aces from Gracelyn Myhre in a 25-14, 25-13, 25-13 home win. Myhre opened the first set with a 6-0 service run and served five consecutive points in the second to snuff out Vale’s final threat.

Sisters will take on Corbett (18-5), a 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 26-24 winner against Scio, in Friday’s quarterfinals at Springfield High School. 

Elise Seals had 19 digs for the Vikings, and Jojo Cleaver had a team-high seven kills and Sadie Graviet added six. 

Valley Catholic 3, St. Mary’s (Medford) 0 

The defending champion Valiants (19-5) cruised to a 25-7, 25-18, 25-5 home win in Beaverton to continue their title defense. Willa Kayfes had 10 kills and hit .529, while Addie Emerson added eight kills, 15 digs and five aces, and setters Jaya McGregor and Katiya Arellano combined for 28 assists.

Emma Johnston led the Crusaders with nine kills and eight digs, Maddie Ward had five blocks, and Noelle Thickett added 12 assists. 

“We played tight in the first set but really picked it up in the second set,” said St. Mary's coach Katie Miller. 

Burns 3, Warrenton 0

Akylah Kaino had 24 kills and 11 digs, and Ashley Wright directed the Hilanders attack with 34 assists, five aces, four digs and two blocks in a 25-22, 25-19, 25-11 home win that sends Burns (26-5) to the final site for the fifth consecutive season. Jocelyn Graham added 10 kills and five aces. 

Olivia Lyons led the Warriors with 13 kills. Jamie Annat added eight kills and eight digs, and London O’Brien had 10 assists, four kills and three aces. 

Cascade Christian 3, Westside Christian 2 

The Challengers (23-4) overcame an 11-10 deficit in the fifth set to outlast the visiting Eagles 26-28, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12 and advance to the final site for the first time since 2018. Maddie Todd led a balanced Cascade Christian attack with 18 kills, while Poppy Freeman added 12 and Molly Griffin had 44 assists and nine digs. 

Jeryn Hildenbrand had 32 kills (.371 hitting) for Westside Christian, which was bidding for its first state tournament berth since 2016. Ella Perry added 50 assists, 12 digs and five kills, JoJo Christiansen had 36 digs, and libero Louise Steyn returned from a bad knee sprain to make 20 digs with a 2.23 serve receive rating. 

Santiam Christian 3, Horizon Christian 0 

Joya Euhus had a dominant first set for the host Eagles (18-6), and Teagan Wilson led a third-set comeback from an 11-4 deficit as Santiam Christian returned to the final site for the 21st time in the past 22 seasons with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-22 home win. Wilson finished with a team-high 20 kills and four aces, Luice Vigil had 13 digs and three aces, and Lexie Boshart added 31 assists. 

Creswell 3, Dayton 0 

Kimberlee Kelsey had 27 assists and five kills, and Lizabelle Osborn added a match-high 15 kills with 11 digs and three aces to lift the Bulldogs (16-6) to a 25-13, 25-14, 25-23 home win. Piper Hanson chipped in 12 kills and 11 digs as Creswell earned a fifth consecutive trip to the state tournament. 

Pleasant Hill 3, Lakeview 0 

Four juniors led the Billies (22-3) to their first trip to the state tournament since 1995, with Ruby Jackson making 10 kills and Cheyenne Green adding nine kills and 13 digs in a 25-15, 25-11, 25-14 home win. Claire Crawford dished out 34 assists with four aces, and Emily Krauss had 18 digs.

CLASS 2A

Santiam 3, Clatskanie 0 

The Wolverines (17-8) made the most of their first playoff appearance since 2013, winning 25-23, 25-16, 25-20 at home to qualify for the final site for the first time since 2002. Maizy Downey had 21 assists, with Makayla Dodge (nine kills) her primary target. Kasey Solus added six blocks and three aces, and Maddie Allen also served three aces.

Santiam will face top-seeded Western Christian (24-2), a 25-14, 25-10, 25-18 winner over Monroe, in Friday’s quarterfinals at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.

Natalie Baker had 10 kills, six blocks, 12 digs and a perfect 3.0 serve receive rating for Clatskanie, and Lacey Willis had five kills and 11 digs. 

“Some of the best defense and serve receive I have seen from these girls all year,” said Clatskanie coach Amanda Baker. “Unfortunately, we could not overcome the unforced errors.” 

Grant Union 3, Blanchet Catholic 1 

Drew Williams had 14 kills (.303 hitting) and Brilynn Combs added 13 to go with a 2.8 passing rating as the host Prospectors (23-7) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 25-9, 21-25, 25-14, 25-19 victory. Kynlee Pettyjohn had 12 kills for Grant Union.

Salem Academy 3, Bandon 0 

The Crusaders (19-6) kept alive their quest for a three-peat with a 25-11, 25-16, 25-6 home win, serving 20 aces — including eight by Perri Showalter. Emma Brewer had a match-high 24 kills, and Haley Krieger added 16 assists.

“Right from the start, we had a goal, and we stayed in control and focused,” said Salem Academy coach Melissa Holman. “Set 3 was a statement. Great serves and great serve receive.” 

Oakridge 3, Culver 0

The Snyder sisters — Sadie (15 kills, 17 digs, three aces) and Jade (13 kills, 19 digs) — led the way as the Warriors (28-2) won 25-17, 25-18, 25-21 at home to reach the final eight for the second consecutive season.

They will meet Lowell (27-4), a 25-18, 25-15, 25-22 winner over Stanfield, in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Gaston 3, Heppner 0 

Rhys Niederberger led the Greyhounds (18-4) with nine kills and four aces, and Mykenzie Hardie and Lexi Fern added six apiece in a 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 home win that sends Gaston to the state tournament for a third consecutive season. Cayden Henderson had 20 digs for the Greyhounds. 

Portland Christian 3, Willamina 0 

Alyssa Baird had 16 kills, Finley Marine added 12, and the Royals (18-1) rolled to a 25-18, 25-3, 25-10 home win to qualify for their first state tournament since 2019. Payton Becker dished out 36 assists, with Addison Johanson adding six kills. 

Hadley Hughes had six kills and three digs for the Bulldogs, who will return all but one senior next season after they had a three-year run of tournament appearances snapped. Sylvie Berry added four digs, and Nichole Goodwin had five assists. 

CLASS 1A

Crane 3, Bonanza 0

Taya Nelson went on an 18-point serving run in the second set to help propel the Mustangs (30-2) to a 25-9, 25-6, 25-15 home win. 

“We played with teamwork and executed well,” Crane coach Maddye Wester said. 

Crane will take on Adrian (20-8), a 22-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-17 winner over 2021 champion and 2022 runner-up North Douglas, in Friday’s quarterfinals at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.

Joseph 3, Lost River 0 

Cooper Nave had 19 kills, Aimee Meyers made 35 digs, and Marley Hayes led the Eagles (24-9) in blocks and aces in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-11 home win that sends them to the state tournament for the first time since 2018. They reached the quarterfinals two years ago, when the OSAA limited the tournaments to four teams apiece because of COVID restrictions. 

Umpqua Valley Christian 3, Prairie City/Burnt River 0

Sisters Zoey and Amy Pappas had 13 assists apiece, with Zoey adding 10 kills, 12 digs and four aces, while Amy had 12 kills and eight digs as the Monarchs (22-3) advanced to the final eight for the second consecutive season with a 25-10, 26-24, 25-19 home win. Alli Hu added 13 digs, and Meagan Hellenthal had four kills, three blocks and seven digs.

Trinity Lutheran 3, South Wasco County 0

The middle of the Saints attack clicked all match, with senior Ava Elliott and junior Aubree Weisner recording nine kills apiece in a 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 home win that sends Trinity Lutheran (25-4) to its first state tournament since 2015.

“The connection between senior setter Lexi Valentine and Ava finally clicked in a big way,” Saints coach Kristin Bryan said. “Ava was unstoppable on fast and slow tempo swings, and Aubree was excellent at finding the holes in the Redsides defense.” 

The Saints will play St. Paul (24-9), a 25-10, 25-18, 25-12 winner over Union, in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Crosshill Christian 3, North Clackamas Christian 0

The Eagles (22-5) rallied from a 21-19 deficit in the third set to complete a 25-21, 25-18, 28-26 home sweep and return to the state tournament for the first time since 2019. Sophomore Ryland Minnick had 13 kills and four aces, while classmates Sierra Poush (12 kills, 11 digs) and setter Hannah Dripps (35 assists, 12 digs) also had big matches. 

Powder Valley 3, Imbler 1

Rachel Stirewalt had 14 kills and was 100% from the service line, Paige Braseth had six kills, and Jayda Cant added five kills and four blocks for Imbler, which started strong but couldn’t sustain its momentum after setter Alex Patton suffered a sprained ankle toward the end of the first set of a 23-25, 25-18, 25-5, 25-14 loss at Powder Valley (28-4).
