Oregon high school volleyball playoffs: Highlights from Day 1; vote for Wednesday's top star
The Oregon high school volleyball playoffs opened Wednesday with first-round action in 6A, 3A and 1A. Here are some of the highlights and top performers from the first night of matches.

CLASS 6A
Grant 3, Glencoe 1
Cecily Wagstaff had 12 kills with a .417 hitting percentage, and An Roesinger hit .563 with 10 kills to lead the Generals to a 25-9, 17-25, 25-19, 25-10 home win.
Rachel Peterson added 24 digs for Grant, which won in the first round for the second consecutive year. The Generals will face top-seeded Jesuit in Saturday’s second round; the Crusaders ended Jefferson’s first playoff trip since 2009 with a 25-7, 25-13, 25-11 victory.
Central Catholic 3, South Medford 0
The Rams swept to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-9 victory in Southeast Portland to advance out of the first round for the 27th consecutive season.
Julia Slaughter led the Panthers with 18 assists and 12 digs, and Mayen Akpan had nine kills and 17 digs.
“This was the first playoff game for three-fourths of our team, and we showed some nerves behind the serving line,” said South Medford coach Robin Akpan.
South Salem 3, Sandy 0
Sisters Malena and Briella Mathis had 10 kills apiece, and Kamree Orizotti added 37 assists and four aces to lead the host Saxons to a 25-11, 25-9, 25-16 victory.
Nadiah Luna had 16 digs for South Salem, which is looking to advance to the final site for the first time since 2017. They’ll play host to Central Catholic on Saturday.
Sheldon 3, Tigard 0
Emma Fairbairn had 14 kills and Yana Tuioti added 12 as the Irish continued defense of their state title with a 25-12, 25-8, 26-24 home victory. Alyssa Lewey had 11 digs for Sheldon, and Gracee Robertson served five aces.
The Irish will meet Westview, a 3-1 winner over David Douglas, in a rematch from last year’s semifinals — this time with a berth in the final eight on the line.
Amber Walker led Tigard with eight kills.
West Salem 3, Wells 0
The Titans erased a 14-11 deficit in the third set to complete a 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 sweep of the visiting Guardians. They’ll travel to Nelson, a 3-1 winner over Mountainside, on Saturday for a berth in the state tournament.
Nelson 3, Mountainside 1
Madi Andrews had 24 kills, 14 digs and five aces, and Gabrielle Hill added 17 kills and 11 digs as the Hawks rallied after dropping the first set for a 21-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-14 home win. Morgan Armitage had seven kills, Avi Trees made 12 digs, and setter Amelia Eubanks had 42 assists and 13 digs.
Oregon City 3, Grants Pass 0
Strong serving from Phoebe Hyland and Olivia Adamo powered the Pioneers to a 25-17, 25-13, 25-17 home win.
“We continued to build momentum into the third set and finished the match strong,” said Oregon City coach Erica Frafjord.
Tayler Ziegler led the Cavemen with 17 assists, Brooklyn Wakefield had six kills, and Devyn Foster chipped in four kills and two blocks.
Forest Grove 3, North Medford 1
Jadyn Punchocar had a match-high 16 kills, Sydney Chrismer added 11, and Sofie Fox had 38 assists to lead the host Vikings to a 25-14, 25-16, 19-25, 25-16 victory. They’ll head to Oregon City for Round 2 on Saturday.
Vikings coach Jeff Leo credited a strong serving performance (just four errors in four sets) as they closed the match on a 13-4 run.
“We kept the ball in play and kept down our unforced errors,” he said.
Barlow 3, North Salem 0
Senior Olivia Brown led a balanced Bruins offense with 14 kills in a 25-15, 25-17, 25-21 home win — their first postseason victory since 2017.
Sherwood 3, Lakeridge 0
Setter Hannah Brown had a solid night with 33 assists and six aces, and Lia Wagner also served six aces to go with nine digs in the Bowmen’s 25-18, 25-10, 25-10 home win. Aria Birdsong had a team-high nine kills for Sherwood, which plays host to Barlow on Saturday for a spot in the state tournament.
Sunset 3, McDaniel 0
Sara Davies had 12 kills while hitting .286, Leila Yazd dished out 19 assists with two aces, and Kamryn Spooner made 16 digs to lead the Apollos to a 25-21, 25-21, 25-5 home win.
“McDaniel played well, but in the third set, the kids settled down a little bit and just played,” Sunset coach Lad Salness said.
St. Mary’s Academy 3, McNary 0
The Blues earned their first playoff win since 2013 in their first home playoff match since 2012, dispatching the Celtics 25-20, 27-25, 25-13 in downtown Portland. St. Mary’s Academy plays Sunset on Saturday in the second round, vying for its first trip to the state tournament since 2000.
Roseburg 3, West Linn 0
Kaela Klopfenstein handed out 26 assists, and Grace Ipsen had eight kills and seven digs to lead Roseburg to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 home win. Arlie Aasen was 100% from behind the service line and had five digs, and Channing Finlayson added six kills and two blocks for Roseburg, which travels to Sprague on Saturday for the second round.
Sprague 3, Beaverton 0
The Olympians continued their bid to make a fifth quarterfinal trip in the past six full seasons with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-17 home victory. Brooke Friesen had a match-high nine kills and seven digs, Khloe Livingston hit .304 with eight kills, 10 digs and two aces, Evie Morrissette had 16 assists, and Charlotte Ponier made 15 digs.

Vale 3, Coquille 0
Sadie Graviet had nine kills, and Brogan Payne had six blocks as the Vikings made the eight-hour bus ride to the Oregon Coast and swept the Red Devils 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.
Elise Seals had 12 digs and McKenna Justus added 10 for Vale, which won’t have as far to travel Saturday when it takes on top seed Sisters for a spot in the state tournament.
Westside Christian 3, Yamhill-Carlton 0
The Eagles were without three starters because of illness and injury, but sophomore Kinley Deewall moved to middle blocker and had six kills, two blocks and two aces, and senior captain Paige Lindsey had a team-high 10 kills and three aces in a 25-12, 25-17, 27-25 home win.
JoJo Christianson was an all-around threat with seven kills, seven digs and four aces, libero Samantha Shephard added 12 digs, and Ella Perry set 23 assists for Westside Christian, which meets No. 3 seed Cascade Christian in Round 2 on Saturday.
Warrenton 3, Nyssa 0
Jamie Annat (13 kills, 24 digs) and Emma Smith (seven kills, two blocks) dominated the net for the Warriors in a 25-10, 25-10, 25-16 home win. Olivia Lyons added 21 digs and London O'Brien had 14 assists and four aces for Warrenton, which will make the long trip to Burns on Saturday with a spot in the state tournament at stake.

Crane 3, Condon 0
The Mustangs served 16 aces, with Ava Bowen, Kortney Doman and Kaitlyn Siegner having four apiece, and Doman also had 13 kills (.541 hitting) in a 25-13, 25-10, 25-9 home win. The top seeds will play host to Bonanza, a 3-0 winner at Mohawk, on Saturday for a spot in the quarterfinals.
North Douglas 3, Eddyville 0
Brooke McHaffie had 18 kills and two blocks, Maddy Vaughn served 10 aces to go with seven kills and eight digs, and Paige Decker had 23 assists and three aces in the Warriors’ 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 home win.
Brooklyn Cyr led North Douglas, the 2021 state champion and 2022 runner-up, with nine digs. Next for the Warriors is a trip to Adrian for a second-round match Saturday.
Joseph 3, Southwest Christian 0
Joseph received strong performances from Cooper Nave (13 kills), Aimee Meyers (nine kills) and Marley Hayes (five blocks) in a 25-17, 25-15, 25-15 home win. The Eagles will play host to Lost River on Saturday in the second round.
Lost River 3, Jordan Valley 2
Jasmin Cobian had 24 kills, Betty Overcash added nine, and Avery Turner and Eelana Gonzalez combined for 43 digs to lead Lost River to a 23-25, 26-24, 16-25, 25-23, 15-9 home win.
“We had some struggles but came back resilient and mentally tough to get the games finished,” said Raiders coach Amanda Donohoe.
Umpqua Valley Christian 3, Rogue Valley Adventist 0
Amy Pappas had 11 kills, 14 assists and nine aces, and twin sister Zoey added 10 kills and 15 assists to lead UVC to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-9 home win. Alli Hu had 17 digs for the Monarchs, who will meet Prairie City/Burnt River in Round 2 on Saturday.
Trinity Lutheran 3, Echo 0
Freshman Charlotte Quinn served the final 12 points of the match to close out a 25-7, 25-22, 25-7 home win for the Saints.
Kiya Young and Malia Hernandez each had seven kills, Aubree Weisner added six kills and five blocks, and Ava Elliott had five kills and four blocks for Trinity Lutheran, which faces South Wasco County on Saturday after the Redsides knocked off defending champion Damascus Christian in four sets.
St. Paul 3, North Lake 0
Meredith Coleman was 28 for 28 serving, and Gracie Koch handed out 29 assists and went 18 for 19 at the service line as the Buckaroos made North Lake’s first playoff appearance in the past 13 years a short one with a 25-10, 25-10, 25-16 home win.
Isla Haven was 13 for 13 serving for St. Paul, which plays Union on Saturday for a berth in the state tournament.
Crosshill Christian 3, Open Door Christian 1
Madison Hoffmeister and Ellie Bartel had 14 kills apiece, and sophomore Ryland Minnick added 13 kills, 22 digs and eight blocks to lead the Eagles to a 25-21, 23-25, 29-27, 25-18 home win. Bartel also had 19 digs as Crosshill Christian earned its first playoff win since 2019.
North Clackamas Christian 3, Perrydale 0
Olivia Woody had eight kills and served seven aces to pace the Saints in a 25-13, 25-11, 25-16 home win. They’ll travel to Crosshill Christian for Round 2 on Saturday.
Imbler 3, Myrtle Point 0
Alex Patton directed a balanced Imbler attack with 36 assists, and Rachael Stirewalt had a match-high 15 kills in a 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 home win. Jayda Cant had seven kills and 10 blocks, and Marlen Rivas served four aces as the Panthers were 100% from the service line in the final two sets.
Imbler will travel to Powder Valley for a second-round match Saturday.
