Central Catholic boys cross country
The Rams triumphed at the Meriwether Cross Country Classic, held at Meriwether National Golf Club in Hillsboro. Central Catholic took first place in the 30-team event with a score of 103 points. Columbia River, Wash., finished second with a score of 122. Junior Mason Hawkins helped lead the way for the Rams, as he ran to sixth place in the individual results with his time of 16 minutes, 33.04 seconds for the 5,000-meter race.
Corvallis boys cross country
The Spartans, behind a solid pack of runners near the front of the race, was the team champion at the Silver Falls Oktoberfest Invitational, held at Silver Falls State Park. Corvallis finished in first place at the 10-team event with a score of 35 points. South Albany was second at 63. Junior Cole Fiegener led the way for the Spartans, running to third place in the individual standings with a time of 16 minutes, 1.3 seconds for the 5,000-meter race. He was followed by teammates Calvin Atkinson, who was fourth at 16:48.0, and Joseph Parmigiani, who was fifth at 17:06.3.
Corvallis girls cross country
The Spartans ran to victory at the Silver Falls Oktoberfest Invitational, held at Silver Falls State Park. Corvallis claimed first place in the standings at the 10-team event with a score of 25 points. Silverton was second at 104. Senior Kate Middleton led the way for the Spartans, placing second, individually, in the race with a time of 19 minutes, 27.0 seconds for the 5,000-meter course. Sophomore teammate Lucia Williams was third at 19:32.9.
Crater girls cross country
The Comets took first place in the team standings at the Pear Picker 5K challenge, held at Tou Velle State Park. Crater had a score of 59 points to take first place in the 10-team event. Klamath Union was second at 74. Freshman Haddie Barsalou led the way for the Comets at the race, finishing fourth individually with a time of 20 minute, 54.62 seconds. Sophomore teammate Reese Garnica was fifth at 21:09.39.
Crescent Valley volleyball
The Raiders won 25-13, 25-16, 25-20 at Dallas and then picked up a 25-10, 25-9, 25-19 home win over Woodburn to improve to 4-0 in Mid-Willamette Conference play and to 6-0 on the season. Senior Bella Jacobson had totals of 18 digs, 13 kills and 10 aces in those two victories.
Estacada boys soccer
The Rangers posted a 4-1 home win over Philomath to improve to a perfect 4-0 on the season. Senior forward Jose Gonzalez-Felician tallied three goals for Estacada in the victory, while senior goalkeeper Cole Myers had 10 saves.
Franklin football
The Lightning moved to 3-0 on the season by running to a 42-6 win over Cleveland in a Portland Interscholastic League opener played at Cleveland High School. Junior receiver Cash Landau had eight catches for 208 yards and three touchdowns for Franklin in the victory, giving him 320 yards and six touchdowns through three games.
Hillsboro girls soccer
The Spartans posted a 5-0 win over South Albany in a nonleague match played at Hillsboro High School, upping their season record to a perfect 5-0. Hillsboro, which also has victories over school district rivals Glencoe and Liberty, has outscored its opponents by a 23-4 margin. Junior Diana Correa scored three first-half goals in the Spartans’ latest victory.
Jesuit girls soccer
The Crusaders scored a 5-0 home win over Lake Oswego and they triumphed 8-0 at Tualatin in nonleague contests to improve to 6-0 on the season. Junior forward Claudia Rose had a total of three goals in those two wins while senior midfielder/forward Abby Cox had one goal and five assists.
Lake Oswego girls cross country
The Lakers ran to the team championship at the Meriwether Cross Country Classic, held at Meriwether National Golf Club in Hillsboro. Lake Oswego had a score of 38 points to take first place. Lakeridge was second at 66. Junior Sofie Howard helped lead the Lakers to the victory, as she finished third in the individual results with her time of 18 minutes, 47.04 seconds for the 5,000-meter race.
Marist Catholic football
The Spartans edged Mazama 33-29 in a battle of Class 4A powerhouses played at Marist Catholic. The Spartans got the game-winning touchdown on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Nick Hudson to CJ Giustina, coming with 1 minute and 24 seconds left to play in the contest.
Marist Catholic girls soccer
The Spartans improved to 5-0 on the season by edging North Marion 2-1 in a nonleague match played at North Marion High School. The Marist Catholic defense, including defensive midfielder Ella Braunger, center backs Piper Paslay and Emma Hart, outside backs Gina Schroffner and Kate Firth, and freshman goalkeeper Nev Ficek, who made six key saves in the contest, was crucial in the victory.
Mazama volleyball
The Vikings opened Skyline Conference play by getting a 25-16, 25-13, 25-17 win over Phoenix behind 11 assists, four kills, four aces, three digs and a bock by senior setter Alexia Lowe. Mazama then battled its way to second place at the Sisters tournament, which features top Class 4A and 3A teams from Oregon and Idaho. Senior outside hitter Gilliam Merhoff helped lead the way for Mazama at that event with 32 digs, 27 kills, seven aces and two blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Cali Bitzer had 21 kills, 16 digs, 11 blocks, three assists and an ace, and senior outside hitter Isabella Lowe had 30 kills, 25 digs, three aces, two assists and a block.
Mountain View football
The Cougars powered their way to a 49-0 win over Forest Grove in a nonleague game played at Mountain View High School. Mountain View, which improved to 3-0 on the season with its second straight shutout, has now outscored its three opponents by a 135-20 margin. Sophomore running back Angel Valenzuela helped lead the Cougars to the victory over the Vikings, running for 166 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries.
Nelson volleyball
The Hawks went unbeaten during the week, getting Mt. Hood Conference wins over Reynolds and Central Catholic, and then winning all four of their matches at the Grant tournament, defeating Redmond, Parkrose, Sunset and South Salem, all by 2-0 scores. Sophomore outside hitter Madi Andrews had 69 kills, 53 digs, 23 aces and two blocks for the week to help lead the way for Nelson.
North Medford boys cross country
The Black Tornado claimed the team title at the Pear Picker 5K challenge, held at Tou Velle State Park. North Medford had a team score of 40 points, edging second-place Crater, which had a score of 44. Junior Elijah Zavala helped lead the Black Tornado to the victory, as he was the individual winner of the race with his time of 17 minutes, 8.15 seconds.
Oregon City volleyball
The Pioneers picked up wins over St. Mary’s Academy and Tigard in Three Rivers League play, and then defeated Glencoe, Sherwood and Forest Grove at the Oregon City tournament to up their season record to a perfect 7-0. Senior middle blocker Olivia Adamo helped lead the way for Oregon City during the week with 40 kills while hitting 0.294. She also had impressive serving streaks during the win over the Blues and at the tournament.
St. Paul volleyball
The Buckaroos scored a 25-10, 25-21, 19-25, 25-14 win over Crosshill Christian in a Casco League showdown played at St. Paul. With the victory, St. Paul improved to 5-0 in league play, and to 8-2 on the season. Crosshill Christian, which was unbeaten coming into the match, moved to 5-1 in league matches, and to 8-1 on the season.
South Medford boys soccer
The Panthers moved to 5-0 on the season by posting a 5-2 home win over Grants Pass in a Southwest Conference match. Junior forward Toni Arizaga and senior forward Eloy Saucedo each scored a pair of goals for South Medford in the victory.
Stayton girls soccer
The Eagles bested Gervais/Kennedy 2-1 in a nonleague road match to end their 21-match winless streak. Junior Zoey Ashwell and sophomore Amarylli Garcia each scored a goal for Stayton in the long-awaited win. It was the team’s first victory since it won 2-0 at home against Sweet Home on Oct. 19, 2021.
Tualatin football
The Timberwolves bested Wilsonville 22-13 in a battle of Class 6A and Class 5A powerhouses played at Tualatin High School. Senior Jayden Fortier had a pair of touchdown runs and a key interception late in the game for the Wolves in the victory.
Westside Christian boys soccer
For the first time in more than 20 years, the Eagles are off to a 4-0 start to the season. They’ve outscored their opponents by a 23-2 margin over those four matches. The team is led by senior captain Brady Housley, who has seven goals and five assists so far on the season.
