Oregon high school girls soccer playoffs: Highlights from Day 1; vote for Saturday’s top star

The Oregon high school girls soccer playoffs opened this weekend with first-round action in 6A and 3A/2A/1A. Here are some of the highlights and top performers from the first day of matches.

CLASS 6A
Jesuit 9, Sprague 0
Hanna Slama had two goals and two assists, and Claudia Rose and Marian Dunne also scored twice to lead No. 1 seed Jesuit to a first-round victory over Sprague at Cronin Field.
Kammy McClennan had a goal and three assists for the Crusaders (15-0), ranked No. 4 in the nation by United Soccer Coaches. Abby Cox and Jo Frischniecht also scored for Jesuit, which plays host to Oregon City — a 3-2 winner at West Salem — on Wednesday night.
Oregon City 3, West Salem 2
Taylor Alexander scored in the 33rd and 49th minutes, and Kylee Turner had the game-winner midway through the second half as No. 17 Oregon City (10-3-2) went on the road and knocked off West Salem (9-2-4).
Pioneers keeper Elsie Marineau allowed only one goal during the run of play (the Titans’ other goal came off a penalty kick), while co-captain Mia Spellman “held down the middle of the park while not allowing West Salem many opportunities from the midfield,” coach Marshall Brewer said. “Our girls played well from the back to the front.”
Tigard 1, North Medford 0 (SO)
Maya Hawks recorded her sixth consecutive shutout, making four saves, and 12th-seeded Tigard (7-3-5) went 5 for 5 in the penalty shootout to outlast the visiting Black Tornado 5-3.
McKenna Eggleston, Ella Erickson, Abby Hergert, Jaiden Riodil and Stella Roth converted their penalties for the Tigers, who advanced out of the first round for the first time since 2015.
Hawks gave up two goals in five Three Rivers League matches and has seven shutouts this season.
Margaret Hamlin made 12 saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season, and Payton Miller, Brycelin Endrikat and Claire Holcomb converted their penalties for North Medford (7-5-3).
“From last season to this, the girls really stepped it up,” said Black Tornado coach Morgan Barry. “They showed up from the first minute and played their hearts out to the last minute today.”
Tualatin 2, Central Catholic 0
Avery Porter and Maya Loudd scored for fifth-seeded Tualatin (10-5) in its first-round home win over Central Catholic (5-6-4).
“We didn’t have much intensity in this game,” coach Kale Dwight said. “That is something that will have to be rectified by the next game.”
Sheldon 2, David Douglas 1 (SO)
David Douglas played much of the second half and both overtimes down a player, yet the Scots (8-5-2) took Southwest Conference champion Sheldon (13-1-1) to a penalty shootout before falling 4-3 in PKs to the fourth-seeded Irish.
Khloe Huskic scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from her sister Katee, and goalie Evelyn Hollingsworth followed a shutout of Clackamas that secured the Scots’ playoff spot by making 15 saves and not allowing a goal during the run of play. Sheldon got its goal on a penalty kick.
Barlow 5, South Salem 0
Kennedie Shuler and Kat Tercek each had a brace, and goalkeeper Kassidy Waibel made several key saves late in the match to preserve a clean sheet as the 15th-seeded Mt. Hood co-champion Bruins (10-2-4) rolled to the first-round home win in east Gresham.
Cleveland 1, South Eugene 0
Lola Pierce’s cross into the box found Amalia Galm in front of the net for an easy tap-in with 10 minutes remaining to lift the ninth-seeded Warriors (9-3-3) to the first-round home win.
Forest Grove 3, Mountainside 2 (SO)
Mountainside led 2-1 at halftime on goals by Hana Sawan and Addison Bellm, but a second-half own goal allowed Forest Grove (10-3-2) to force overtime. After two scoreless extra periods, the 11th-seeded Vikings advanced 4-3 in a penalty shootout. Ava Henkemeyer scored Forest Grove’s first-half goal.
Grant 5, Newberg 0
The defending state champion and seventh-seeded Generals (9-4-2) scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half to build off a 2-0 halftime lead en route to the first-round win at Delta Park.
Erin McDevitt opened the scoring for Grant in the 27th minute, and Abbie Day headed home a pass from Katarina Roesinger eight minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Roesinger also assisted on Julia Hannam-Larsen’s goal seven minutes into the second half, then scored herself off an assist by Olivia Lukrofka in the 53rd minute.
Five minutes later, Lukrofka assisted on Veronica Bianco’s goal to finish the scoring.
Michaela McCollum made three saves to preserve the shutout.
Other first-round winners Saturday were 2021 finalist Beaverton (1-0 over South Medford), Lakeridge (3-2 over McDaniel), Sunset (2-1 in a shootout over Wells), St. Mary’s Academy (2-1 over Sherwood), Lake Oswego (7-0 over Willamette), Lincoln (2-1 over Westview) and West Linn (5-0 over Southridge).

CLASS 3A/2A/1A
Banks 2, Riverside 0
Sabina Bair and Josie Kimmel scored goals seven minutes apart midway through the second half, and Teagan Henderson made three saves to record the shutout as Banks (8-6-1) earned its first playoff victory since 2014.
The match was abandoned with seven minutes remaining when a Riverside player sustained a head injury after hitting the ground, requiring ambulance transportation.
“Both teams played hard and were physical,” said Pirates coach Yvonne Torres, whose team finished 8-6-2. “Our goalie had some amazing saves, and it brought a lot of momentum and confidence for our girls.”
Dayton 4, Santiam Christian 3
Taylor Wilson completed her brace with two minutes remaining as Dayton (12-4-2), missing three starting midfielders because of injury or illness, erased a 3-1 halftime deficit en route to the first-round home win over Santiam Christian (8-8-1).
Liv Haima scored twice in the final nine minutes of the first half to put the Eagles ahead after Rylie Hedgcock volleyed home a tying goal for Dayton in the 28th minute.
Wilson drew the Pirates within a goal with a 51st-minute strike, and in the 69th minute, a handball in the penalty area led to Kya Kearns converting the spot kick to tie the score at 3-3.
“We had several players who usually play minimal minutes have to step up in this game,” said Pirates coach Pat Myer. “Probably why the first half was tough for them, as they were in positions they never played before.”
Four Rivers 2, Blanchet Catholic 1 (SO)
Olivia Chavez stopped three penalties in the shootout, and she and Mariana Lopez converted their spot kicks to send Four Rivers (10-2-3) of Ontario to the first-round home win.
Thalia Lararus put Blanchet Catholic ahead 3:45 into the match, but Lopez tied the score for the Falcons with 16:35 before halftime off an assist from Kayla Vera.
The Falcons travel to top seed Catlin Gabel on Wednesday for their second-round match.
Also winning Saturday was McLoughlin, which beat Brookings-Harbor 2-0.
