Oregon commit Jackson Shelstad, Modesto Christian's Jamari Phillips headline 2022 Capitol City Classic tournament

The loaded field includes California Open Division state runner-up Modesto Christian and Texas state champion John Paul II

West Linn guard Jackson Shelstad and three prospect-laden out-of-state teams headline the field for the 2022 Capitol City Classic this December in Salem, Oregon.

Organizers of the high school basketball tournament believe the field could be its strongest yet in its seventh year, boasting 16 boys teams — 13 from Oregon — and an expanded girls bracket.

In the past, the tournament has hosted big names such as current Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley and current Los Angeles Lakers forward Troy Brown Jr.

The teams West Linn could face include defending 6A Texas private school state champion John Paul II, St. John Bosco (California) and Northern California power Modesto Christian.

Modesto Christian, the CIF Open Division runner-up last season, is led by 6-foot-3 junior guard Jamari Phillips, who boasts offers from Oregon, Gonzaga and Kansas, among others. The Crusaders are also led by San Diego State commit BJ Davis and 6-foot-10 center Prince Oseya.

Jamari Phillips drives against Corona Centennial Duke-bound five-star guard Jared McCain in the 2022 CIF Open Division State Championship in March.

John Paul II reloads despite losing several big pieces to transfer over the summer. The Cardinals are led by 6-foot-7 junior wing Bryson McGlothin and rising sophomore guard Austin Senters.

St. John Bosco might be known for its national powerhouse football team, but it also boasts a young, talented basketball team that includes consensus five-star sophomore guard Elzie Harrington, sophomores Jaison Joyce and Kade Bonam, as well as 6-foot-4 combo guard Jack Turner, a Loyola Chicago commit.

A 6-foot Oregon commit and ESPN's No. 47-ranked senior in the country, Shelstad runs the show for the Lions. But his supporting cast has many believing they are the team to beat in Oregon entering the season.

West Linn boasts a formidable backcourt that added 2021-22 Portland Interscholastic League MVP Adrian Mosley in the offseason under new head coach Robert Key, who led Grant to a state title in 2018.

The out-of-state teams will face a strong in-state field which includes projected 6A power Beaverton, reigning OSAA state champions Wilsonville (5A) and Cascade (4A). Of the 13 Oregon teams in the field, 12 were in the OSAA playoffs last season.

The tournament includes an eight-team girls field, an expansion after debuting a girls bracket in 2021.

The boys tournament takes place Dec. 16-21 at Willamette University and the girls side runs Dec. 19-21 at Corban University.

Brackets for both the boys and girls field are set to be announced on Dec. 1.
