He competed in several regional and national track meets and on several youth AAU basketball teams. He traveled nationally to play basketball for many years. In football, he won several awards his senior year, including 2nd team All-State and Conference Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference tight end, 1st Team All-Conference defensive end and team MVP. He led his team in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss. He was also the leading receiver and had nine touchdowns. On the basketball team, Max started every game since the first game of his freshman year and earned All-Conference honors each year. On the track and field team, Max was a varsity thrower in every meet since his freshman year and was the No. 1 thrower for shot put and discus in the Portland Interscholastic League. In his junior season, he was the No. 2 thrower in the PIL for javelin. He qualified for the Nike Outdoor Nationals. Max has been involved in Camp Kesem, a camp sponsored by University of Oregon students for children who have a parent dealing with a cancer diagnosis. His father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer when Max was 7 years old and is looking forward to finally coming back as a counselor when he starts at Oregon. Max has felt lucky having his dad coach him in football and track and field all the way through his senior year while still dealing with his diagnosis. Max has also loved being a part of his teams’ brotherhood and has always enjoyed passing on his love of sport when volunteering to help in youth clinics for each sport.
