OKLAHOMA CITY - The hits were coming fast and hard during Midwest City Carl Albert’s biggest game of the season.
Facing Guthrie in a battle of undefeated teams and a possible district title on the line, junior quarterback Kevin Sperry took some serious blows from the Bluejays' defense. After one series, Sperry could be seen on his knee along the Titans' sideline gathering himself.
It looked as though he might have to miss possibly the rest of the game. However, when Carl Albert came back for its next possession, Sperry was under center.
He went onto throw the game-winning touchdown pass to Marcus James in the 24-21 victory to keep the defending 5A state champions undefeated.

According to Sperry, there was never any thought he was not going to come back into the game. Sitting out is not in his DNA.
“This is the way I was raised,” said Sperry. “That's the way I am. I couldn't come out of that game. This is too big of a rivalry.
"Any game, really. Any game I wouldn't want to come out.”
Even Carl Albert coach Mike Dunn, who has seen his share of talented players, thought he saw something special that night in Guthrie.
“What he did was unreal to go out there,” Dunn said. “I think he missed two plays and he was hurting. I think he missed two plays all night long. It just says a lot about his character and his toughness.”

While that mindset may be expected for the athletes who grew up in Midwest City and have played alongside each other since youth football, Sperry was still a newcomer to the Carl Albert program. He transferred from Rock Hill High School in Prosper (Texas) during the summer.
But as Sperry prepares for his first postseason run with the Titans, it didn’t take him long for him to see Carl Albert as his family.
“This year has been amazing,” Sperry said. “I love this team so much. They accepted me pretty much from day one.
"I just love every single one of them. They work so hard during practice and all offseason, and we deserve all of this.”

Sperry, the No. 13 ranked quarterback in the 2025 class, gained national attention when he committed to the University of Oklahoma in March. A couple of months later, he had moved to the Carl Albert school district and was battling for a starting spot on a team that had just won a state title.
It was during those offseason months that Sperry displayed his move to Carl Albert wasn’t some kind of show or PR stunt. He came to do work and help continue the Titans' long lineage of success.
“I just got to give all glory to God,” Sperry said. "I'm not focused on college right now. I'm recruiting everything like that for OU, but I'm focused on this team right now. I'm focused on going undefeated, and win state.”

While Dunn knew right away he had a special talent on his hands in Sperry, as the season has progressed, Dunn has witnessed the intangibles that make Sperry a football player, not just a quarterback.
“He’s made the plays he needed to make. There's nothing more I can say,” Dunn said. “And there's a lot of times that I don't really, until the playoffs, where I'll single out a guy in a huddle after a game. But Kevin Sperry, he's the best quarterback in this state and he's also probably the toughest.”
Despite Carl Albert blowing out most of their competition this year, Sperry has put up solid numbers. Through nine games, he had completed 84-of-124 passes for 1,474 yards and 19 touchdowns and only two interceptions. He is also second on the team in rushing behind fellow Oklahoma commit Xavier Robinson with 54 carries for 335 yards and six scores.
But Sperry knows it’s only going to get tough when the 5A playoffs start for the 10-0 Titans, who will have a target on their backs. However, Sperry and the Titans will be able to look back at the win over Guthrie and how they persevered as a reminder of what they can do when times get tough.
“We continue to fight. We never gave up,” Sperry said. “We continue to build each other up. We never broke. We never broke each other down.
"It's just such a mature team, such an experienced team. I'm so proud of them.”
Carl Albert begins its 5A title defense in the opening round on Friday, as the Titans are at home to face El Reno.
