Elgin 2024 RB Matt Lund becomes school's all-time leading rusher

With more than 4,300 career yards, Lund a key catalyst for an undefeated Owls squad

Elgin running back Matt Lund now has the most rushing yards in school history, as he currently has 4,301 for his career.

“It felt amazing and has been the highlight of my year so far,” Lund said. “I honestly like the hard-nosed runs and not so much the big long touchdowns run in space.

"Me being able to move the ball and pick up these runs can open up the pass game. It definitely gives our offensive coordinator many more options to score and makes it hard for any defense we face.”

Lund set the record last week against Noble, in which the Owls won the game, 70-6. In that game, he recorded 177 yards and two touchdowns.

Elgin head coach Chalmer Wyatt has enjoyed coaching him for five seasons, as he came to Elgin when Lund was coming into eighth grade.

“It has been really fun to coach him,” Wyatt said, “He has grown from that fast, skinny eighth-grader and has transformed into a beast.

"It is special seeing every yard he has and I am so proud of him."

In his last two games, Lund has tallied five touchdowns on 24 carries and rushed for 372 yards. For the season overall, he has scored 18 touchdowns, 13 of those rushing and the other five receiving.

Lund has had many long runs for the Owls. When Elgin played Cache, he scored a 70-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Recently, he scored a 99-yarder against El Reno.

Last season, he had a long TD run in a district contest against Lawton MacArthur, a game in which the Owls won with a TD in the final seconds.

“He has had many moments and big runs for us,” Wyatt said. “He has put up incredible numbers for us and I am happy he is on our football team, so I do not have to prepare for him.”

Lund wants to play football in college, and has had an offer to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

But Lund is really focused on team goals, especially with the playoffs on the horizon.

Elgin currently is 7-0 and the Owls are in the driver's seat to win their district. The Owls will play Friday night at Duncan.

Lund remarked he wants to win a state championship.

“We must keep getting better and continue to give our all in order to win a state championship,” Lund said. “It is not only the goal this season, but the goal every year at Elgin to win a state championship.”
