Motivated Tulsa Union team gets revenge on Owasso in district opener
It was a Tulsa Union team that wasn’t in the best of moods when the Redhawks took the field for their District 6AI-2 opener Friday.
However, they were able to erase their frustrations as the Redhawks - behind five touchdown passes from junior quarterback Shaker Reisig - got a 55-22 win against Owasso at Union-Tuttle Stadium.
Union (3-1, 1-0) had two weeks to stew over their loss to arch-rival Jenks in the “Backyard Bowl.” The Redhawks then had to prepare against an Owasso squad which shocked Union in an epic six-overtime classic in last season’s 6AI semifinal.
But after trailing 8-7, the Redhawks used a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to eventually get back on track.
Early in that quarter, Reisig took a keeper in from 6 yards out, putting Union up, 14-8. With more than four minutes left until halftime, the Redhawks extended their lead to 21-8 when Reisig threw a 62-yard strike to receiver Jino Boyd.
Union also kept Owasso (2-2, 0-1) out of the end zone right before the break, stopping the Rams at the Redhawks’ 2-yard line.
Reisig and Boyd hooked up for a second time two minutes into the second half, set up by an interception from Lane Wood, that made it 27-8.
However, Reisig was far from being done. He had two more TD tosses by the end of the third, a 48-yard strike to Brendon McQueen and a 28-yarder to Boston Carrasco, extending the Redhawks’ lead to 41-8. The latter was set up by an interception from Damien Marshall.
Reisig then made it five TD passes early in the final quarter, a 2-yard toss to running back Jordan Schelling as the Redhawk lead grew to 40 points.
Owasso got back-to-back TDs, the latter a punt return from Noah Hill. But Union scored again when Carrasco returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards.
