Classic in the Country 2024 Day 1: Sheridan, Archbishop Hoban, Lakota West among winners (01/13/2024)
BERLIN, Ohio - The 2023 Classic in the Country began on Saturday at the Reese Center at Berlin Hiland High School. Below is a quick recap of each of Saturday's eight games.
Tusky Valley 52, Western Brown 39
Tusky Valley (10-2) jumped out to a 28-14 halftime lead and led by as many as 20 in the second half before Western Brown (11-5) eventually cut the lead to six early in the fourth quarter.
But the Trojans pulled away after that, scoring eight of the next 10 points to secure the win.
Leah Bourquin led Tusky Valley with 14 points, Kaleigh Norris had 10 and Lacie Levengood had nine.
Western Brown had two players in double figures as well, led by Hadley Jones with 13 and Olivia Fischer with 11.
Waynedale 41, Waterford 32
Waynedale (10-2) bounced back after a loss to Chippewa by leading the entire way against the Wildcats.
The Golden Bears allowed just 14 points in the first half, leading 22-14 after two quarters.
Waynedale, ranked No. 24 in the latest SBLive Ohio girls basketball Power 25, moves to 10-2 on the season.
McKenna Baney led Waynedale with 11 points, while Aylssa Geiser and Addessa Miller each had nine and Cheyanne Chupp scored six.
Kendall Sury led Waterford (11-2) with 11 points and Avery Wagner had 10.
Sheridan 54, Fort Loramie 42
Jamisyn Stinson led the Generals with 20 points as they remained undefeated on the season, now at 12-0.
Stinson went 6-of-10 from 3-point range in the game, including three in the first quarter and one as time expired in the second quarter. Sheridan took a 13-12 lead late in the first quarter on Stinson's second 3-pointer and never trailed from there.
Nora Saffell scored 12 points for Sheridan and Halle Warner added 10 points.
Avery Brandewine led Fort Loramie with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Victoria Mescher and Jaden Rose scored 10 points each.
Fort Loramie drops to 13-2 and sees its 13-game winning streak snapped.
Wadsworth 30, Toledo Notre Dame 24
In a low-scoring affair, Wadsworth improved to 11-5 with a win over Toledo Notre Dame, who fell to 4-7 on the season.
Wadsworth trailed 11-9 at the half but then outscored the Eagles by four in each of the last two quarters.
Emily Nagel scored eight points and had six rebounds for the Grizzlies, while Natalie McDermitt had seven points.
JayLynn Nicholson of Notre Dame led all scorers with 14 points and also led all players with seven rebounds.
Archbishop Hoban 45, Teays Valley 38
Hoban, ranked No. 15 in the latest SBLive Ohio girls basketball Power 25, used a 15-8 advantage in the third quarter to take control of the game and move to 11-2 on the season.
The teams were tied 17-17 at the half and Teays Valley led 21-20 in the third quarter before the Knights hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions by three different players.
Zoey Hodge, Maya Pooler and Finley Kennedy all found the touch from deep and the trio of 3s gave Hoban a 29-21 lead, the largest of the game for the Knights at the time. Kennedy then hit another 3-pointer a couple of possessions later to stretch the lead to nine.
Niera Stevens paced the Knights with 10 points, Kennedy scored nine, Mackenzie Edingburgh had eight, and Hodge and Devin Harris each scored seven.
Kennedy Younkin and Alyssa Horsley each scored 14 to lead the Vikings.
Lakota West 65, Toledo Central Catholic 56
A 20-4 run to close out the first half propelled the Firebirds to a win on Saturday after trailing 21-12 late in the first quarter.
Sophomore Katie Fox led the charge with 30 points, 12 rebounds and five assists as Lakota West improved to 9-3 on the season.
Carolin Bayliff and Lily Johnson each scored 13 for Lakota West.
Central Catholic (6-4) was led by Corniya Clay with 23 points and Brooklyn Vaughn, who had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Margaretta 35, West Holmes 26
Margaretta (12-1) outscored West Holmes 18-8 in the second half after trailing by one heading into halftime.
The Margaretta defense held West Holmes (8-5) to just 14.3% shooting in the second half, as the Knights made only three of the 21 shots they attempted. And while Margaretta went just 4-of-12 from the field in the second half, the Polar Bears got a big shot when they needed it as Ellyse Schaefer hit a 3-pointer with 6:01 left in the game to stretch the lead to 29-23 after West Holmes had cut the deficit to just three.
Schaefer led all scorers with 16 points, while Briar Cline led West Holmes with 14.
Reynoldsburg 55, Hiland 46
A quick 5-0 run by Reynoldsburg in the third quarter put the Raiders ahead by seven, and they never led by less than five the rest of the way.
Hiland led by five midway through the second quarter before a 10-0 run by Reynoldsburg gave the Raiders a 31-26 lead that was cut to 31-29 at half.
The two teams split the first eight points of the second half but a free throw by Sa'Mahn Johnson and baskets by Johnson and Aubree Price accounted for the 5-0 run that put Reynoldsburg in control.
Reynoldsburg (12-4) was led by Johnson with 23 points. Daniya McDonald added 18 points and game-high nine rebounds.
The loss was the first of the season for Hiland (12-1), who was led by Ashley Mullet with 19 points and Joplin Yoder with 16.
